General Function
The Aquatics Director reports to the Senior Aquatics Director and operates in alignment with priorities established by the Vice President of Operations. The role is a key member of the YMCA aquatics leadership team, responsible for overseeing staff scheduling, managing the 2nd Grade Swim Program, and delivering high-quality swim instruction and lifeguard coverage. This full-time role balances administrative leadership with hands-on program delivery, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and welcoming aquatic environment that aligns with YMCA values.
Essential Duties
Program Coordination & Scheduling
- Create and maintain weekly schedules for lifeguards and swim instructors
- Ensure appropriate staffing for all programs, open swim, and rentals
- Adjust schedules for time-off, special events, and changing program needs
- Communicate schedules and changes clearly to staff and supervisors
2nd Grade Swim Program Leadership
- Plan and lead the delivery of the YMCA's 2nd Grade Swim Program
- Coordinate with local schools and community partners
- Manage rosters, transportation (if applicable), and instructor assignments
- Ensure lessons are aligned with YMCA swim safety curriculum
- Track student progress, attendance, and report outcomes
Swim Instruction (20 Hours/Week)
- 15 hours/week of teaching group swim lessons using the YMCA curriculum
- 5 hours/week of private swim instruction, tailored to individual needs
- Provide inclusive, safe, and engaging swim instruction for all ages and abilities
- Build rapport with participants and caregivers; provide progress updates
Lifeguarding (5 Hours/Week)
- Serve as a certified lifeguard during scheduled shifts
- Monitor safety of pool deck, enforce rules, and respond to emergencies as needed
- Maintain required certifications and physical readiness
Leadership – Director On Duty (4 Hours/Week)
- Act as Director on Duty (MOD) for one evening per week for entire facility.
- Oversee operations, support staff, and handle member needs
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with onboarding, mentoring, and training of aquatics staff
- Promote YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, and community outreach events as needed
Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18
- Certifications required: YMCA Lifeguard, CPR/AED, First Aid, O2 Administration
- Swim Instructor certification (YMCA or equivalent) required
- 1–2 years aquatics leadership or instructional experience preferred
- Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills
- Comfortable with administrative tools (Excel, scheduling software, Daxko)
- Ability to work Tuesday through Saturday, including one evening per week
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds
- Able to perform lifeguard rescues, teach swimming, and respond to emergencies
- Extended standing, swimming, and movement on deck required
