The Transmission Department Manager will provide leadership and direction for the Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) Transmission Department within the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice. This pivotal role will lead a dynamic team of transmission engineering professionals, ensure technical and project delivery excellence, and drive strategic initiatives that support regional growth.
The position will balance execution excellence and innovation with a strong emphasis on culture, diversity, and talent development to ensure sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities:
1. People Leadership, Culture & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers and designers through effective recruitment, coaching, and performance management.
- Provide leadership across multiple offices within the MAR footprint, ensuring consistency, collaboration, and equitable support for all staff.
- Partner with HR and Recruiting to attract top talent, proactively engage with universities and industry networks, and oversee onboarding for interns, graduates, transfers, and experienced hires.
- Support a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, promoting Burns & McDonnell’s MacCulture principles.
- Conduct annual performance reviews, develop individualized growth plans, and hold regular check-ins with staff to reinforce accountability and career progression.
- Implement training and mentorship programs to strengthen EPC delivery skills and technical excellence.
- Champion an inclusive, collaborative, and safety-driven culture rooted in ownership, innovation, and teamwork.
2. Project Execution & Technical Excellence
- Serve as a senior technical advisor on transmission projects across the region.
- Monitor project performance and take corrective actions to ensure targets for quality, schedule, and budget are met.
- Support QA/QC processes and ensure compliance with the T&D Quality Management System.
- Drive adoption of innovative tools, technologies, and workflows to enhance engineering outcomes and project efficiency.
- Collaborate with Burns & McDonnell India and cross-regional leadership to optimize resource planning and technical direction.
3. Strategic Planning & Business Growth
- Contribute to the development and execution of the region’s strategic business plan, including SWOT analysis and vision setting.
- Partner with Marketing, Account Management, and Business Development teams to pursue opportunities, support sales strategies, and strengthen client relationships.
- Actively participate in conferences, and thought leadership activities to promote the firm’s capabilities.
- Evaluate long-term value of pursuits and ensure alignment with core strengths and regional priorities.
4. Cross-Regional & Organizational Alignment
- Coordinate with other regional and national leaders to share best practices and align on standards, tools, and key initiatives.
- Support the integration of global engineering resources to ensure consistent delivery across the firm.
- Collaborate on shared client work with other T&D departments and regional offices to reinforce One Burns & McDonnell.
5. Operational, Resource & Financial Oversight
- Ensure profitable and sustainable growth of the department through effective staffing, utilization, and workload balance.
- Monitor chargeability, overhead investment, and project performance to achieve financial targets.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts in delivery efficiency, processes, and organizational consistency.
- Provide input on selecting and implementing project management systems.
- Support development of specialized market offerings, including EPC and program management solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or related field.
- Minimum 7 years of consulting or engineering experience in transmission & distribution, with a focus on design or project management.
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience in a technical or engineering environment.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of project management tools and methodologies.
- Track record of financial success in project delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of industry experience.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Project Management Professional (PMP).
- Experience with EcoSys, Microsoft Project, PowerBI, and similar tools.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting, developing, and retaining engineering talent.
- Experience in business development, including proposal writing and client engagement.
Prior experience in a multi-office, matrixed organizational structure.
