Role Description
The Senior Estimator – Heavy Civil Infrastructure will play a critical role in developing accurate cost estimates for water and wastewater projects, including treatment plants, pipelines, pump stations, and related facilities. This position requires a seasoned professional with strong technical knowledge, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors. The Senior Estimator will lead estimating efforts for large-scale, complex projects, helping shape bid strategies and ensuring competitive, accurate proposals that align with business objectives.
Future responsibilities: Support early-phase conceptual estimating for collaborative delivery methods such as CMAR, Design-Build, and IPD. Contribute to refining estimating processes, tools, and databases to improve accuracy, efficiency, and competitiveness.
Responsibilities
- Estimating and Cost Development
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for large-scale heavy civil infrastructure projects with a focus on water and wastewater systems.
- Analyze drawings, specifications, and related documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness of estimates.
- Develop bid strategies and present estimates to senior leadership for review and approval.
- Maintain and update historical cost data, unit pricing, and productivity benchmarks.
- Identify risk factors and provide recommendations for mitigation.
Collaboration and Communication
- Partner with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to gather pricing, scope details, and constructability input.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and discussions with stakeholders to validate project requirements.
- Coordinate with leadership to evaluate project opportunities and determine competitiveness.
Strategic Support and Process Improvement
- Lead estimate reviews, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with business goals.
- Support conceptual estimating during early project phases, particularly for alternative delivery methods.
- Recommend process enhancements and best practices to strengthen estimating systems and project outcomes.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in estimating software such as InEight (Hard Dollar), Bluebeam, and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, materials, means, and scheduling.
- Proven ability to perform conceptual and detailed estimates across varying project stages.
- Knowledge of collaborative delivery methods including CMAR, Progressive Design-Build, and IPD.
Soft Skills
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and lead estimating efforts for complex, high-value projects.
- Attention to detail and adaptability in managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
Preferred Experience
- Minimum of 5 years in heavy civil construction estimating, with a strong preference for water/wastewater projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred).
