About The Role
Are you passionate about supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness? Do you want to be part of a team that is committed to compassion, respect, and justice? The Salvation Army is seeking a dedicated and empathetic Initial Assessment and Planning (IAP) Worker to join our mission-driven team in West Metro Melbourne.

At The Salvation Army, we believe in transforming lives with love, care, and dignity. As an Initial Assessment and Planning Worker, you will be on the frontline of our crisis response – offering immediate support, guidance, and access to safe, affordable accommodation for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Reporting to the Team Leader, this is a permanent full-time position, based in Sunshine, VIC. 

Compensation is in accordance with SCHADS Award Level 5.

You Will Successfully
  • Provide person-centred assessments and help individuals and families access essential housing options
  • Connect clients to support services, community resources, and The Salvation Army's wider network
  • Develop action and safety plans that address immediate risks, vulnerabilities, and support pathways
  • Offer trauma-informed, strengths-based support tailored to those with complex needs
  • Collaborate with dedicated professionals who share a vision for a just and inclusive society

You Will Have
  • Compassion and resilience, working with a calm and optimistic approach
  • Experience in working with individuals who present with complex needs
  • Strong communication, where you can navigate difficult conversations with empathy and clarity
  • Confidence in building collaborative relationships with clients, colleagues, and external stakeholders
  • Alignment with The Salvation Army's values of Integrity, Compassion, Respect, Diversity, and Collaboration
  • A relevant Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Welfare, or a related field – or significant relevant experience
  • The ability to undertake thorough assessments, manage referrals, and develop support plans
  • A commitment to culturally safe, inclusive, and client-focused practice
  • A current Working with Children's Check
