Position Description
This position is responsible for elevating the organization’s public identity, brand, community events (Forum and CEO Retreat) and public facing materials, including materials, reports and digital assets. The Director of Communications will be responsible for crafting and implementing a results-oriented communications plan and will be able to link communications strategies with calls to action that result in strengthening InterAction’s value proposition, cross-sector influence and Member service.

Full-time
This is a full-time position based in Washington D.C. InterAction maintains a hybrid work environment and employees are eligible to telework three days a week and required to work in the office two days a week. There is an expectation that employees will be based in the Washington D.C. region.
Essential Functions
- Elevate InterAction’s identity, brand and public facing materials/collateral to include digital assets and hard copy.
- Provide strategic oversight of the organization’s website, editorial and digital content and calendar.
- Shape an effective communications program that utilizes new and traditional platforms and strategies to showcase the work and issues of InterAction and our members collectively.
- Work with staff to ensure consistency in messaging and proper management of brand assets.
- Secure, maintain and grow media relationships with reporters, editorial writers, columnists and broadcast media to highlight our work and our solutions to pressing global challenges.
- Craft policy statements, annual reports, Op-eds and other communications as needed.
- Build and maintain relationships with peers in member organizations to assist in establishing strategies and coordinate messaging when necessary.
- Manage public-facing events including InterAction’s Forum and CEO Retreat.
- Assist in developing fundraising ideas and pitches to potential donors to support our strategic and communication goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Professional experience in senior level organizational communications of 8+ years.
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deploy strategic, creative and results-oriented programs/campaigns across traditional and digital media.
- Ability to identify the most appropriate medium for select communications and audiences.
- A track record of performance in a complex and often deadline-driven environment.
- Outstanding organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to concurrently direct multiple projects for internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to hear, aggregate, and coalesce diverse perspectives and feedback in service to overarching outcomes / goals.
- Skill in “managing up,” and delivering appropriate counsel to senior leadership when required for coalition work involving staff from multiple organizations.
- Excellent writer and editor, having written for diverse audiences across diverse mediums.
- Experience with media tracking services and systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with association membership, nonprofit organizations, and NGOs
- Experience with international policy, development, public administration, public policy, or business organizations
- Knowledge of international development and humanitarian issues.
- Experience in marketing an organization to stakeholders
- Experience with Crisis Communications
- Experience with grant writing and proposal development
Supervisory Responsibilities
The position supervises the Press Secretary and external consultants as needed.
Compensation
Salary range $125,000 - $160,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience.
InterAction offers three CareFirst medical insurance plans and an excellent benefits package. Available plans include an HMO, Point of Service and PPO option. The HMO plan is 100% employer paid for employees at all coverage levels.
Travel
Approximately 5% domestic travel, required.
