About the Department

Our Sioux City Parks and Recreation department is seeking (4) two part-time, self-directed group of individuals to be responsible for the primary operation of the IBP Ice Center as Parks and Recreation Specialists! The Ice Center provides a fun setting for a great position with the City of Sioux City.

Our specialists will oversee the operations of IBP Ice Center as we host hockey games, private ice rentals, and weekly public skate sessions. 

These Specialists will be trained on Zamboni operations, ensure facility is clean, oversee the concession stand, and staff safety. 

Candidates must be willing to work weeknights, weekends, and holidays.

Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. 15-30 hours a week.

Position Duties

• Provides primary customer service and acts as a resource person in the facility.
• Works with community to promote understanding of the facility and goodwill toward the facility.
• Works with the public and coordinates with the public and private-party participants.    
• Coordinates general traffic in the facility and may erect traffic barricades.
• Sets up and tears down chairs, tables and recreational equipment.
• Performs basic cleaning and maintenance of facility and restrooms including trash removal, sweeping, dry and wet mop, snow removal/salting, and litter patrol.
• Cleans, re-stocks and maintains floors and rugs using appropriate machinery.
• Performs minor equipment repairs, maintains glass surfaces, and completes painting tasks.
• Stores, prepares, and serves food products and refreshments in a manner that meets all local and state health code requirements as well as facility rules and guidelines.
• Performs other related manual tasks in the operation and maintenance of the Parks and Recreation properties.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
• Maintains good public relations through courteous and prompt attention to all citizen requests for services.
• Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours.
• Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.  In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Minimum Qualifications

Job Knowledge:  Thorough knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to successfully oversee all facets of the facility; ability to respond to emergencies and utilize necessary safety precautions to be used in a public setting; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates; knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words and rules of composition and grammar; ability to coordinate multiple events and multi-task.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal); ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public as to understand; ability to read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; ability to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
 ability to work as a member of a team in order to accomplish tasks; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Physical Requirements:  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell; ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert force repeatedly or continuously over time, involving moderate levels of muscular endurance, repeated use of abdominal and lower back muscles to support operational tasks throughout the duration of a shift.; ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms, and/or legs; ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer); ability to see details at a distance. 
Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is equally performed outdoors year-round, and inside a recreation facility environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is subject to potential occupational or environmental hazards commonly associated with working in outdoor recreation.  Must be able to perform work in the evenings and on weekends.
Examples of outdoor field conditions include varying weather conditions, with varying street level noises; and touring work sites that are in various stages of development.
