Hours: 6.5 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year

JOB DESCRIPTION 

The paraeducator in this position will give reading instruction to students in a small group intervention room and classroom. They will be responsible for carrying through prescribed instructional programs under the direct supervision and training of certificated staff using specific reading intervention curriculum. Other duties include adapting and making materials appropriate to instructional needs, maintaining accurate records, administering and scoring reading assessments, recess supervision, lunchroom supervision, and performing other paraeducator duties as assigned by the supervisor.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1. Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
3. Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA or equivalent to application. Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
4. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
5. Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
6. Must pass a basic skills test.
7. Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
8. Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

1. Must be able to assist with toileting, catheterization, and tube feeding of student.
2. Required academic skills to assist students (i.e. knowledge in sciences, language arts, math, reading and social studies).
3. Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
4. Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
5. Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
6. Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
7. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
8. Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
9. Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
10. Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
11. Must be willing to become first-aid certified if required.

QUALIFICATIONS PRFERRED

1. Recent experience working at the elementary school level with students with academic and special needs.
2. Ability to relate effectively with children.
3. Cope with unpredictability; be flexible, diplomatic and cooperative.
4. Demonstrate patience, enthusiasm and positive attitude toward working with elementary education students.
5. Maintain composure in difficult situations.
6. Value the confidential nature of sensitive student’s information.
7. Able to work independently and carry out assigned tasks.
8. Able to operate computer and other equipment as necessary.
9. Effectively communicates and develops relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community.
10. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to work with small instructional student groups, one on one, and in a student assessment environment. 
11. Able and willing to work in team setting and different instruction as guided.
12. Able to relate effectively with students who have a variety of needs and challenges and backgrounds.
13. Willingness to attend building and district instructional trainings, protocols and procedures. Willing to follow all district policies and procedures, especially in the area of instruction and assessment.
14. Positive evaluations and recommendations that support character and work ethic.
15. Excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist nurse with health needs of student, including catheterization and tube feeding.
2. Assist students with their educational needs, including assisting students in the regular classroom in reading and others areas as needed.
3. Instruct students as directed by the certificated staff.
4. Administer reading assessments.
5. Prepare instructional materials as requested.
6. Participate in staff and program in-services.
7. Maintain records as necessary.
8. Carry out plans and activities for students as designed by the reading specialist and classroom teacher.
9. Work cooperatively with parents, staff and students.
10. Provide clerical assistance as needed.
11. Assist in providing supervision of students in order to provide a safe, orderly, positive learning environment.
12. Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.
13. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. • Mobility: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, push or pull 18-26 lbs., sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arm.

• Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

• Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

• Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F +. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
