Job Summary

Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Purpose Statement The job of Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant is done for the purpose/s of assessing students' functional development level; providing appropriate treatment to meet individual student objectives; and providing recommendations for program development and student placement. This job reports to the Director Support Services Essential Functions • Assists Occupational Therapist for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. • Assists with assessing students' perpetual motor skills, motor coordination, and sensory motor development and processing (e.g. administering tests, observing students, etc.) for the purpose of determining their deficits and developing recommendations. • Attends meetings and workshops (e.g. IEP's, training, team meetings, meetings with outside agencies, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information. • Consults with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapist, teachers, class assistants, families, etc. for the purpose of providing requested information, reviewing/revising students' occupational therapy goals/objectives, developing plans for services and/or making recommendations. • Implements therapeutic activities and instructs students, teachers, parents and other involved persons (e.g. positioning, adjusting special equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care to students and/or supporting the student's IEP plan. • Maintains treatment equipment and supplies (e.g. swings, balls, puzzles, etc.) for the purpose of implementing motor/therapy goals. • Maintains files and/or records (e.g. progress reports, billings, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or ensuring an up-to-date trail for compliance. • Performs site visits at multiple work sites including home visits for the purpose of providing therapy and assistance as required. • Prepares written materials (

Job Description

FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: CERTIFIED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the general supervision of the principal and daily oversight of the Occupational Therapist from the West Orange County Consortium for Special Education (WOCCSE), provides direct treatment for students with disabling conditions as part of a multi-disciplinary team; assists in the assessment of children; prepares records and reports; and provides consultation services to parents and teachers. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant works closely with an Occupational Therapist using technical training to provide treatment to students with special physical needs. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Assists occupational therapist in the evaluation process through observation and/or clinically derived surveys in areas including development of perceptual motor skills, motor coordination, and sensory motor development and processing. E Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team members upon written referral; assists occupational therapist in developing a treatment program aimed at improving the identified areas of function as they relate to the child's educational needs. E Participates in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings representing the occupational therapist to report goals and objectives and is responsible for providing direct service and/or consultation in order to meet these goals. E Maintains records and reports as required and complies with WOCCSE administrative policies and state and federal laws and regulations. E Under the supervision of the occupational therapist provides consultation services to classroom teachers focusing on handwriting programs, feeding, seating, and modifying activities or environment to optimize students involvement, grasping and using pencils/scissors, and strategies to increase attention to task. E Facilitates sensory motor groups. E Attends meetings and conferences; travels to different sites as required. E Performs related work as required. Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant - Continued Page 2 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Intellectual, sensory, and physical development of children Educational and developmental needs of children with specific disabilities Techniques used in the assessment and treatment of disabilities Applicable treatment modalities and theory for the pediatric population Record keeping procedures Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary ABILITY TO: Effectively communicate occupational therapy treatment techniques and goals to parents, teachers, and other program staff Apply occupational therapy techniques in the treatment of children with disabilities Work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams and with parents Prepare clear and concise reports Communicate effectively orally and in writing Work independently Establish general schedules and priorities Understand and carry out oral and written instructions Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and experience working in a variety of settings including with school-age children in a school, home, and/or clinics, and working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team including working collaboratively with families. Training in sensory integration is desirable. LICENSE/CERTIFICATON REQUIRED Proof of certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant from an approved program by the American Occupational Therapy Association, National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), or California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT). Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver license. WORKING CONDITIONS ENVIRONMENT: Indoor environment; subject to driving vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read and review related documentation and written reports; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; occasionally stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching and twisting; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
