Job Summary

A credit professional responsible for credit risk structuring of transactions and sanctioning covering multiple industry
sectors within defined discretionary limits.
Support the Wholesale Credit team in providing credit input to Absa Bank of Ghana Limited (ABGL), delivering a WorldClass Credit service and contributing towards achievement of the team’s risk and business objectives.
Ensuring the optimal quality of the credit portfolio by application of best practice in decision-making, to a maximum
defined personal lending discretion

Job Description

Key Accountabilities

Accountability: Credit Risk Management Time split %: 60-70%

Outputs:

  • Ensure the highest standard of credit quality through the structure, sanctioning, monitoring and control of credit applications. Maintenance of these standards both personally and as partof the Corporate Credit Team.
  • Sole lending discretion, ABGL linked up to a defined maximum (depending on personal experience/accreditation).
  • Exercise judgment and discretion in the evaluation and approval/decline of higher risk classification credit proposals.
  • Provide feeds into business and credit policy development, where appropriate.
  • Provide feeds into credit process development, where appropriate.
  • Implementation and ongoing delivery of business and credit policies and processes.
  • Responsibility for personal adherence to governance, compliance, and lending portfolio controls. Ensuring own conformance to policy and procedures within the Corporate Credit Function, including proactive management of agreed responsibilities for Data Integrity.
  • Maintain interactive relationship with Credit Risk Coaching & Support Team and Conformance Team.
  • Advise on risk reward and challenge pricing where appropriate.
  • Ensure loan bookings are within agreed lending framework and lending rules and qualifying criteria.
  • Develop or lead the acquisition of credit scoring models or credit decisions tools that are fit for purpose.
  • Ensure consistent and timely delivery of analytics support to minimize losses and maximize profits through Trend Analysis, Impairment Analysis, Account management analysis, Profitability analysis, Stress testing, Fraud analytics, Collections strategies and loss reduction strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce loss and enhance revenue by developing improved lending criteria, building new lending rules, or lending and collection strategies etc.
  • Undertake regular review of policy rules and lending criteria to understand association with default.
  • Identify new opportunities to drive process efficiency, improve operational efficiency and for enhancement, streamlining services through use of advanced analytics, automation and optimization.

Outputs:

  • Deliver service in line with agreed business needs.
  • Work in partnership with Country colleagues and proactively anticipate, respond to and seek to exceed the expectations of customers.
  • Work with Country colleagues, providing post application-based coaching and discussion, where appropriate to ensure effective development and delivery of bespoke Risk solutions for customers.
  • Proactively contribute to embedding agreed change management initiatives in support of process and quality improvements, cost reductions and development of people.
  • Contribute towards the Team operating within cost budgets making recommendations for

‘working smarter’.

  • Review of Product or Portfolio Quality Report to identify key issues in the portfolio for the attention of line manager or head of department.
  • Communicate analytical results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop data driven credit risk strategies within the Credit Risk team.
  • Monitor and manage Portfolio Triggers, Mandate & Scale and Risk Appetite within agreed limit.
  • Monitor and manage account conduct, loan repayment and portfolio performance for quality growth.
  • Analysis of management Information with appropriate recommendations to line manager or the Head of Credit
  • Provide input into review and development of Portfolio modelling.
  • Accountability for Credit scorecard performance review.
  • Agree and be responsible for all change initiatives in portfolio.

Accountability: Staff Management Time split %: 10-20%

Outputs:

  • Drive proactive application of Absa Behaviours both personally and throughout the team and coach and support CCM within the Team.
  • Own personal development process by ensuring that a SMART objective have been agreed with team leader.
  • Ensure that performance review feedback has been given to you and agree remedial actions with team leader where nonperformance aspects have been defined.
  • Communicate career plans with team leader and ensuring that proper training are provided

  • Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Absa Policies and Policy Standards
  • Understand and manage risks and risk events (incidents) relevant to the role.

Role / Person Specification

Education & Experience Required:

Essential

  • University degree in any of the following fields: Commerce, Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Business Administration or Finance.
  • A relevant master’s degree and/or related professional qualification will be an added advantage e.g. ACCA, CPA, CFA, etc.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the commercial lending specifically in origination, credit analysis, credit risk structuring and/or sanctioning of transactions covering multiple industry sectors.
  • Excellent understanding of commercial credit and associated risks
  • Knowledge of commercial legal environment.
  • Accredited in commercial and advanced commercial lending.

Preferred

  • ACIB/equivalent business experience/other appropriate qualification preferable

Knowledge & Expertise:

  • Excellent Wholesale Credit Risk Assessment Skills
  • Strong financial analysis skills and experience in financial models.
  • Excellent banking product and lending solution knowledge
  • Communications and presentation skills (Written and Oral)
  • Excellent problem identification and solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to interact with and influence high level decision making.
  • Effective time management and planning Preferred
  • Previous sanctioning experience will be an advantage

Additional Details

  • Role holder must deliver consistent high quality risk solutions in a high volume environment.
  • A specific coaching and training plan will be developed in order to achieve accreditation for credit risk allowing direct, one stop sanctioning. Achievement of this will be an integral measure of success in the role
