About the Department

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Under the direction of assigned supervisor, the Pool Operator performs duties in support of the operation and maintenance of the city’s pool facilities and as assigned, may serve as a lead worker making work assignments and monitoring the completion of work. Responsibilities may include providing customer service; monitoring facilities and sites for safety and cleanliness; overseeing and providing training instruction and/or content; performing routine maintenance of facilities and sites; setting up and tearing down for special events; and maintaining the order of the facilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS (For use in a job series only)

Positions in this class perform duties in support of the operation and maintenance of the city’s pool facilities and as assigned, may serve as a lead worker making work assignments and monitoring the completion of work. This class differs from the higher-level Parks Maintenance Coordinator class that performs supervisory-level activities and perform the work of subordinates in support of maintenance and operations activities and directives.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND TASKS:

The following list of functions, duties, and tasks is typical for this classification.  Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform other closely related or department-specific functions, duties, and tasks from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Maintains the safety and cleanliness of the recreation area and/or facility; tests and maintains chemical balances in pools; adjusts chemicals based on test results; vacuums, sweeps, and cleans pools, deck areas, slides, diving boards, entry ways, sidewalks, and other fixtures; washes windows; cleans and vacuums carpets and upholstery. 
• Monitors and maintains equipment and facilities; provides repair, painting, and/or servicing of showers, toilets, pool equipment, flooring, surfaces, heating and cooling equipment, exercise equipment, and other equipment of the assigned area.  Factors repair expenses in determining repair options. 
• Organizes and maintains documentation of work activities, repairs, purchases, and other required records and files. 
• Monitors supplies and equipment inventory; evaluates and determines supply needs; prepares purchase requests, and/or purchases items within established guidelines. 
• May serve as a lead worker in making work assignments and monitoring the completion of work. 
• Manages records and information in any format, in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations, and city policies, guidance, and records retention schedules. 
• Installs and repairs mechanical equipment, pumps, motors, and pressure lines, including the inspection of the integrity of mechanical components.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Applicable laws and codes related to pool maintenance
• Applicable mechanical, electrical, heating, and plumbing systems
• Tools and methods used in installation and maintenance of pool mechanical equipment
• Mathematical concepts
• Safe work practices
• Modern office equipment, including computer use and relevant software
• Chemical balancing of pool water

JOB QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED; and two years of pool operator experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above.

LICENSE(S) / CERTIFICATIONS:

• Valid, current Driver’s License and safe driving record
• Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator certification
• CPR and First Aid certification
