TITLE: School Counselor - Elementary
REPORTS TO AND IS EVALUATED BY: Building Principal; Director of Student Services
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time bargaining unit position – 10-month work year; FLSA Exempt.
ANTICIPATED START DATE: February 2026
LOCATION: Seylar Elementary
COMPENSATION: In accordance with PEA Collective Bargaining Agreement
PRINCIPAL FUNCTION: Provide the necessary school guidance including individual counseling, small and large group counseling, staff and student orientation, test preparation, administration and interpretation, information maintenance and dissemination, and cooperation with staff, administration and the community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Counsel individually or in groups with selected populations of students.
- Consult with staff, parents, and community on issues concerning student needs.
- Organize, administer and interpret standardized assessment instruments.
- Provide orientation activities for students and parents new to the school.
- Secure, review and maintain student records. Disseminate information as needed.
- Participate in the crisis intervention process.
- Promote positive school climate through programs and activities.
- Pursue opportunities for professional development to enhance guidance skills.
- Conduct on-going communication with students, staff and parents to relay and/or gather information and maintain relationships.
- Notify parents on behalf of students when the need arises for outside resources.
- Participate as a consultant on Instructional Support Team, Multi-Disciplinary Evaluation and Individualized Educational Planning Team, as needed.
- Coordinate the gifted screening process and student evaluations.
- Facilitate the transition of the student population at all levels.
- Coordinate school-wide prevention programs.
- Facilitate Developmental Guidance Program.
- Provide services to students and parents in a timely and effective manner and promote awareness of counseling programs and services.
- Collaborate with administration and staff in identifying and addressing the needs of exceptional students.
- Collect and use data for the purpose of improving programs and services to students.
- Facilitate effective career exploration and decision-making by means of interest inventories, computer technology, and other strategies.
- Assist in the process of career awareness, goal setting, planning and decision-making.
- Counsel students in the selection of courses appropriate to their goals (middle school, high school).
- Assist students and parents with the process of selection and application to post-secondary educational institutions (high school).
- Assist the administration in the scheduling process (middle school, high school).
- Other activities as may be assigned by the building administrator or Director of Student Services.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Master’s Degree in Counselor Education from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Pennsylvania School Counselor teaching certificate.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUISITE SKILLS:
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Any additional qualifications deemed appropriate by the Board of Education.

- Child Abuse Clearance (Act 151) ) – Dated within one year
- FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114) ) – Dated within one year
- School Personnel Health Form (Physical and TB test)
- PDE 6004 Form (Act 24)
- Sexual Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Release Form(s) (Act 168)

The incumbent should be able to exert up to 20 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
MEDIUM WORK: The incumbent should be able to exert up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
HEAVY WORK: The incumbent should be able to exert up to 75 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
VERY HEAVY WORK: The incumbent should be able to exert in excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally, and in excess of 50 lbs of force frequently, and in excess of 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
