General Description and Classification Standards:
The Grants Accounting division is responsible for grant related finance and accounting, reporting, and audit functions for the City of Atlanta’s Controller’s Office. The Director of Grants Accounting will oversee the post award financial and accounting processes for grants, reporting, and all activities involved with the Single Audit. This role will lead a team in the financial management and accounting of federal, state, local, and private grants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Grant Accounting & Financial Oversight
Oversee the financial management of all grant-funded projects, including assisting with legislation, tracking expenditures, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements and government regulations.
Ensure that all grant-related transactions are properly recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other applicable standards.
Develop and implement policies and procedures for grants accounting to ensure consistency and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws.
Grant Reporting & Compliance
Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant federal and state laws, as well as grant-specific conditions and restrictions.
Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors during audits related to grant funds.
Assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements related to grants and ensure timely submission of documents for the City’s audit.
Team Leadership & Management
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of grant accountants and financial analysts, providing guidance, training, and support.
Coordinate with other departments to ensure grant funds are properly allocated and tracked across various municipal departments.
Develop and maintain a high level of staff competency in grants management and accounting.
Policy Development & Process Improvement
Continuously assess and improve the municipality’s grant accounting processes to increase efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
Lead the development and implementation of internal controls over grant administration and financial reporting.
Work closely with other City departments to provide guidance on grant-related financial matters, ensuring a seamless workflow.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, or a related field from an accredited college or university; and five or more years of progressive management experience, or any equivalent combination of these qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Work Schedule:
This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in-person work at City worksites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in-person work.
