Salary Range:
General Transportation Tech III (A18): $52,800 - $71,055/annually
$4,400 - $5,921.25/monthly

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other employees.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repair repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid US driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of application with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained the "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

- Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
- Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
- The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
- Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
- Using basic mathematical fundamentals.
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
- Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise
- Subject to vibration
- Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
