The Garden and Farm Specialist is responsible for creating and caring for aesthetically appealing areas for our clients, staff and visitors, ensuring that all areas are maintained, organized and safe. The ideal candidate will focus primarily on:
- Watering and fertilizing all plants as necessary
- Maintaining appropriate light conditions and orientation
- Deadheading (removing any damaged or unsightly leaves, etc.)
- Pruning, trimming, and removing debris from planters
- Manage, maintain, implement, and execute a composting plan
- Participate in the planning, designing, purchasing, planting, and maintenance of display gardens, exhibits and other related areas
- Harvest plants, and transplant or pot and label them
- Observe, treat, and report plant health for possible signs of insects or diseases.
- Keeping all plants free from diseases and insects
- Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other materials to condition soil, using wheelbarrows, carts, shovels, etc.
- Maintain beautiful off-season appearances of top dressing and other ornamental elements.
- Perform associated administrative duties including tracking inventory, documenting and maintaining pesticide and propagation records, and purchasing supplies.
- Effectively coordinates and communicates with members of all other departments
- Monitors physical infrastructure of growing facilities and performs basic maintenance and repairs including but not limited to irrigation, power, structural pieces of gardens, etc.
- Maintain inventories of all gardening equipment and supplies; ensure all related supplies and equipment are maintained in good order and organized appropriately
- Assists with education and mission related activities, and special events. Answers questions from clients relating to horticulture activities and strives to ensure positive guest experiences.
- Must learn and comply with all company safety rules.
- Must always use appropriate safety equipment.
- Must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, machinery, or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisor if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function
Requirements
- High school education
- 2 years horticulture, gardening, landscape or retail nursery experience
- basic mechanical skills and use of hand and power tools applicable to trade
- Ability to prioritize and have efficient time management skills
