The Position
The City of Maple Grove is seeking a GIS Technician. As the GIS Technician you will be responsible for developing and maintaining databases for all components of the digital utility maps using ESRI products. Additionally, you will assist with the maintenance of ArcGIS applications, asset management, and web-based applications. Come and join our growing team and community!
Position Duties
- Accepts work assignments, and direction from various members of the Public Works staff.
- Executes GIS hardware and software operations and maintains data quality control.
- Follows GIS database standards for content, format, design and maintenance procedures.
- Maintains various spatial and non-spatial GIS data sets, such as the sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water sewer system through data entry.
- Provides graphics and maps and other property-related information to both internal and external customers as directed.
- Inputs data from plan sheets to utility databases and asset management system.
- Produces layouts, charts and posters as directed.
- Assists in the maintenance of the Public Works/Engineering Department asset management programs.
- Develops and customizes GIS applications.
- Assists in the creation and maintenance of several web-based applications and pages on the City’s web server.
- Utilizes GPS unit to capture high-accuracy data.
- Assists with the set-up of GIS software on mobile devices and GPS equipment as directed.
- Scans various graphic data and incorporates the data into the GIS applications as directed.
- Assists in daily office tasks such as filing, mailing, recording, maintaining records, copying and other similar duties.
- Helps train and work along-side Seasonal GIS Technicians on projects.
- Provides GIS software-related support to Public Works staff.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
- Automated mapping methods and techniques.
- Capabilities of automated mapping and geographic information processing systems.
- Cartographic drafting and design.
- ESRI application programs.
- Cartegraph asset management software.
Ability to:
- Operate computer keyboard.
- Understand technical concepts and terminology.
- Effectively use automated information processing methods and techniques.
- Operate a geographical information system.
- Organize and prioritize work.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating assigned equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Need to have:
- Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
- Associate’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Computer Science or a related field.
- One year of comprehensive work experience with: ESRI products, preferably in a municipal government setting.
Nice to have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Computer Science or a related field.
- One year of work experience in a governmental agency or engineering consulting firm, preparing plans, graphics and computer databases for municipal-related projects.

Environmental Conditions:
Office environment; exposure to computer screens; some work outdoors.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time; general manual dexterity; adequate speech, hearing, and vision required. Must also be able to operate assigned equipment. Ability to work outdoors and walk from asset to asset.
