ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a D&D Superintendent to join our team supporting the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory! This position is full-time and will be based out of Livermore, California.

The D&D Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of complex decontamination, decommissioning, and demolition activities at an active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) site. This role provides direct leadership to multi-disciplinary field crews, manages daily field operations, ensures adherence to safety and quality requirements, and interfaces with project management, safety personnel, and client representatives. Work is performed in facilities with potential beryllium, asbestos, and radiological contamination — including up to Category 3 nuclear facilities — requiring expert knowledge of DOE requirements, hazard control measures, and project execution strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise field crews including laborers, equipment operators, industrial hygienists, radiological control technicians, and craft personnel during characterization, remediation, and D&D work.

  • Lead daily coordination meetings and pre-job briefings to ensure all personnel understand work scope, hazards, and controls.

  • Assign work tasks, monitor progress, and ensure safe, efficient completion of work according to project schedules and DOE-approved work packages.

  • Implement and enforce site-specific safety plans, radiological work permits, and hazard control measures for beryllium, asbestos, and radiological work.

  • Verify that abatement enclosures, negative pressure ventilation, PPE, and decontamination facilities meet regulatory and site requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOE Orders, and LLNL safety programs during all phases of work.

  • Coordinate and oversee all phases of environmental and radiological sampling and characterization, including pre-D&D baseline assessments, in-process contamination surveys, and post-remediation verification.

  • Ensure sampling and survey activities follow approved procedures, meet data quality objectives, and comply with chain-of-custody and documentation standards.

  • Provide accurate and timely progress updates to project controls teams, including percentage-complete estimates and resource usage.

  • Track productivity and work completion against the baseline schedule; identify and address deviations to maintain project performance.

  • Support earned value management (EVM) reporting by supplying verified field data and progress metrics to management.

  • Serve as the primary field interface with project management, safety professionals, engineering teams, and DOE/client representatives.

  • Prepare and deliver concise daily reports, status updates, and briefings to stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.

  • Resolve field issues promptly by coordinating with the appropriate technical or managerial personnel.

  • Monitor field work for adherence to technical specifications, drawings, and quality standards.

  • Maintain accurate daily logs, inspection records, work permits, and as-built documentation.

  • Support audits, inspections, and project closeout activities by ensuring required records are complete and accessible.

Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree and 10+ years of experience leading field crews in the characterization, remediation, and D&D of facilities with potential beryllium and radiological contamination at DOE or comparable nuclear sites.

  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.

  • Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.

  • Proven track record as a site superintendent or equivalent supervisory role in hazardous material abatement and demolition.

  • Demonstrated experience with all phases of sampling and characterization for facilities up to Category 3 nuclear classification.

  • Familiarity with earned value management principles and the ability to support schedule and cost reporting requirements.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively at all levels — from field workers to DOE senior management.

  • Prior experience at LLNL or another DOE national laboratory.

  • Knowledge of DOE Orders, OSHA standards, and ANSI/ASME codes applicable to D&D work.

Desired Skills

  • DOE Radiological Worker II, HAZWOPER 40-hour, and Beryllium Worker Safety Training certifications.

  • Competent Person training in asbestos and lead abatement, demolition safety, and confined space entry.

  • Working knowledge of earned value management (EVM) concepts and tools (MS Project, Primavera P6, Deltek Cobra or other EVM tools) and experience providing accurate field inputs for schedule and cost performance reporting.

  • Strong leadership qualities, conflict resolution skills, and a track record of developing crew performance and morale.
