We’re looking for a dynamic, strategic, and relationship-driven Special Markets Sales Manager to lead growth across key retail partners, including Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, REI, LL Bean, World Market, and more. In this role, you'll drive revenue, elevate brand presence, and develop new business opportunities while managing account strategy and overseeing external rep groups. You’ll also supervise a Sales Assistant to support seamless sales operations. This is a high-impact role ideal for someone with a passion for retail partnerships and a sharp eye for scaling premium brands. This position is based in our New York, NY office, but we are open to considering remote opportunities for the right candidate. 

Position Specifications

Key Results Areas

National Specialty Retail Account Management

  • Lead all aspects of national specialty retail relationships, including buyer engagement, product presentations, onboarding, and compliance.
  • Develop tailored merchandising programs aligned with each retailer’s unique positioning and audience.
  • Manage account-level P&L to ensure profitability while maintaining competitiveness.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the national specialty retail space.

Sales Rep Group Management

  • Oversee four national outside gift rep groups, driving engagement through biannual webinars, sales reviews, show strategies, and monthly B2B initiatives.
  • Collaborate with rep groups to identify and capitalize on regional market opportunities.
  • Supervise Sales Assistant in supporting rep group operations and communication.
  • Attend and manage presence at key industry gift shows (Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Seattle, Las Vegas) twice annually.

Collaboration with Publishing and Product Development

  • Provide actionable insights on market trends, retailer needs, and product performance to influence publishing and product strategy.
  • Analyze account-level sales performance to identify opportunities and risks.
  • Offer competitive intelligence to guide product development and promotional planning.
  • Contribute forecasts and feedback for new title acquisitions and cover development.

Financial and Operational Oversight

  • Partner with the accounting team to ensure accounts maintain compliance with financial terms, credit limits, and payment schedules.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated success in managing national retail accounts and building profitable sales programs.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with experience managing direct reports.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented with strong follow-through.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Travel required (approximately 20–30%).

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in sales within the book, gift, or consumer goods industries.
  • Experience working with specialty retailers and/or rep groups required.
  • Publishing industry experience preferred.
