PHLEBOTOMIST / LABORATORY CLERK
JOB SUMMARY: This position will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests. In addition, the Phlebotomist / Laboratory Clerk will perform various office tasks required with receiving, processing, reporting and delivering laboratory test results and other lab reports as they are completed in the department and/or received from reference laboratories. The Phlebotomist / Laboratory Clerk maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing, and hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Obtain blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
- Performs screening tests and reports results.
- Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
- Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training. Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital and procedures, and safety practices. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
- Accurately and efficiently processes anatomical and clinical lab test reports and distributes for routing to various locations.
- Fax laboratory and radiology reports to physician’s offices.
- Is capable of handling numerous telephone calls simultaneously which includes reports and requests with regard to the following:
- Receipt and dispatch of orders for specimen collection for testing.
- Requests for patient reports/test results.
- Status of in-house tests.
- Status of reference tests.
- “Turnaround time” for tests.
- Verification of patient test orders.
- Laboratory specimen requirements.
- Copies of patient lab reports.
- Fax reports from reference lab.
- Scheduling of special procedures.
- Arrangements for courier services and transportation for special patient test samples to specialized reference labs.
- Recalls patients for re-draw when recollection of specimen is necessary.
- Familiarity with sources of information about Laboratory testing procedures/policies for the various areas within the Lab (Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Blood bank, and Urinalysis).
- Retrieves pathology data and delivers pathologist’s dictation tapes and surgical pathology requisition to medical Transcriptionist.
- Performs with a minimum of errors, works neatly and with accuracy regardless of volume of work.
- Responsible for maintenance and is capable of operating the various equipment in the Lab office, including but not limited to the following: Copier, fax machine, telephone system, reference lab computer.
- Observes confidentiality both with patient information and co-workers.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or the equivalent.
- Previous Lab/medical experience or education in a health care field.
- Phlebotomy certification required.
- Good organizational skills, communication skills and ability to work independently at a fast pace.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of standing, sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of 25 pounds.
- Must be able to function in a wide variety of environments which may involve exposure to allergens and other health conditions.
- Other physical demands that coincide with the duties of a laboratory professional.
