We currently have ONE part time career opportunities available to join the HKNC team as a Medical Billing Specialist.  The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for the accurate preparation, submission, and follow-up of claims for services funded by the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD)

This position is in-person based out of our Sands Point, NY location.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position ensures all billing activities are completed in accordance with Medicaid guidelines, OPWDD regulations, and agency procedures. The role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of billing protocols, and effective collaboration with program and finance teams. Specific duties include: 

    Submit timely and accurate billing for OPWDD-funded services, including but not limited to Community Habilitation, Day Habilitation, and SEMP.

    Verify that all claims meet Medicaid and OPWDD billing compliance standards.

    Review service documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to claim submission.

    Track claims, address denials or rejections, and resubmit corrected claims as needed.

    Maintain well-organized records and documentation to support internal and external audits.

    Reconcile payments and report discrepancies or outstanding issues to the appropriate departments.

    Work with program staff to resolve documentation issues that may impact billing.

    Support monthly and quarterly billing reports and financial reconciliations.

    Remain up to date on current Medicaid and OPWDD billing policies and regulations.

    Upload remittance information promptly and accurately.

    Generate and distribute daily invoices for HKNC, Field, OBIE, FCC, and HKSB programs, including submission to vendor portals.

    Maintain access to and manage online portals required for state vendor invoice submissions.

    Collaborate with states and HKS counselors to resolve pending authorizations and collections on open receivables.

    Responsible for other duties as may be assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor and/or the Director of the Department

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Associates Degree required, Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, accounting, business, or a related field preferred. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in medical billing, preferably in an OPWDD or Medicaid-funded environment. 
  • Must have familiarity with OPWDD services and billing requirements. 
  • Proficiency in EMEDNY, TABS, and billing software (e.g., Therap or similar systems) required. 
  • Must possess strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and written/verbal communication. 
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations required.  

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Certified Professional Biller (CPB) –Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) 

Salary Range:

$50-55k (USD) Annually
