About the Department

The City of Caldwell Street Department is looking for a Spray Applicator & Pest Control Technician to join their team. Individual mows and sprays weeds and controls pests on rights-of-way and City properties; grades alleys; operates sander; performs manual labor; flags; operates a variety of equipment to construct, repair and maintain the City’s streets, curbs, sidewalks and drainage systems; and performs related work as required.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform manual work associated with weed control, such as spraying and mowing rights-of-way and other City properties. Individual performs construction, repair and maintenance of the City’s streets, curbs, sidewalks, and drainage systems. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Streets Superintendent.  An employee in this class may be assigned to one or more specific areas of responsibility, but are expected to be able to perform all duties associated with the weed spray applicator classification. An employee in this class performs the duties of other employees in the Streets Department as required or as assigned by supervisory personnel. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials and employees, contractors, business owners, other government agencies, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, which may involve adverse weather conditions and related hazards.

Position Duties

  • Maintains weeds in right of ways and City property which includes mowing and spraying; 
  • Keeps a record of spray inventory and spray applications on properties; 
  • Supervises other street personnel and temporary workers as directed; 
  •  Rolls asphalt patching material and assures patch meets grade and standards; 
  • Grades alleys; 
  • Manually digs trenches, secures, lowers and installs pipes and places pre-casts or builds inlet boxes and replaces and compacts bedding and overlay material;
  • Operates mowers, chain saws and weed eaters to maintain right-of-ways, medians and common areas; 
  • Operates double and triple deck flail mowers and tractors in which flail mowers are attached; 
  • Cleans and clears storm water inlets, drains, bridges, creeks and drainage; 
  • Operates trucks, sanders, bobcats, tractors and other light, medium and heavy equipment; 
  • Plants trees, shrubs and plants, landscapes new construction areas and repairs or replaces landscaping disturbed during construction projects; 
  • Cleans and maintains City structures such as parking garages, decks and downtown areas;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions; 
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems; 
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas; 
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner; 
  • Communicates and coordinates with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities to help keep a positive work environment as well as works as a team member;
  • Respects the opinion of others and maintains a positive and professional working relationship with employees, supervisors and others. 
  • Fuels, lubricates, performs preventative maintenance and inspects equipment for use in maintenance facilities and projects; 
  • Cleans and restores construction areas, job sites and other project areas; 
  • Cleans, maintains and repairs spray truck and spray applicators, tools, equipment and facilities; 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and/or Experience Required:

  • At least two (2) years' experience in weed management and abatement.
  • (Preferred) At least 6 months experience in road construction or construction-related industry.
Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements: 
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of an Idaho Class A CDL, No Restrictions with Tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of a Professional Applicator license (Categories CO, RW) or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Preferred Professional Applicator License (OH, GP).
  • Position is subject to on-call and service response within a specified amount of time.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, drug testing and physical.
  • Position is subject to random DOT drug testing.
