PRIMARY FUNCTION of the Preventative and Outdoor Services Lead Mentor:  

Serve as a positive role model for youth by providing support, coaching, training, and supervision through various activities. Provide logistical support for mentoring outings. 


RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB EXPECTATIONS: 

  • Work with youth to develop interpersonal, communication, social, and problem-solving skills, as well as age-appropriate behaviors and constructive use of leisure time 
  • Provide and supervise recreational and social activities based on the goals established collaboratively with the youth, parents, and placing agency 
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of staff and youth, flexibility, a non-threatening manner, respect for youth’s autonomy, confidentiality, socio-cultural values, personal goals, lifestyle choices, and family interactions, and appropriate professional boundaries and ethics 
  • Supporting other staff in planning of activities, logistics of trips and ensuring high quality of programs. 
  • Provide the number of hours per month/week contracted by the placing agency 
  • Complete session progress notes for each session and provide to supervisor, as required 
  • Attend FAPT, treatment team, or family engagement meetings as requested by supervisor 
  • Participate in face-to-face supervision with supervisor at least once per month 
  • Work cooperatively with all Elk Hill staff to improve the quality of the whole organization 
  • Complete additional responsibilities, as assigned.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 

  • Supervisor - Responsible to the Prevention and Outdoor Programs Director, or other supervisor, as assigned 

 

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION STANDARDS: 

  • Attention to detail and quality/quantity of consistent job attendance 
  • Quality/promptness of documentation 
  • High level of involvement and satisfaction of youth, families, and agency staff being served 
  • Cooperation with colleagues, supervisors, and others in the Elk Hill organization 

 

CORE COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • The temperament to work with, and care for, children and families with special needs
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity to Elk Hill’s service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics
  • Experience working with children and/or adolescents 
  • Willingness to travel and work non-traditional business hours 
  • Ability to work independently and without direct supervision
  • Exhibit consistent personal integrity in dealings with youth, families, co-workers, and agency personnel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to complete documentation in a thorough and timely manner

 

CREDENTIALS AND/OR EDUCATION:

  • Highschool Diploma or equivalent required, 10 years of experience preferred
  • Maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid 
  • Maintain a driving record that meets the requirements of Elk Hill 
  • Maintain liability coverage, at the level required by Elk Hill, on personal auto insurance policy 
  • Maintain certification in MANDT Day 1 De-escalation Techniques

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be capable of regularly lifting up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting up to or over 50 pounds.
  • Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including but not limited to water-based games and activities, hiking, camping, boating/canoeing/kayaking, and equine activities
  • Good physical health
  • Ability to traverse inside and outside of the property or other job site including uneven terrain
  • Periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, regularly lift up to 15 pounds

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Periodic transportation of a client as needed or required
  • Periodic travel to other locations as needed or required
