About the Department

Performs routine manual work in the collection of garbage, trash and yard waste in the Sanitation Section of the Public Works Division.

Position Duties

Employees in this class perform manual labor involving the collection of refuse and garbage. Employee loads trash, including furniture, appliances and yard waste from curbside and collection commercial garbage. Work requires that the employee be able to perform heavy manual work continuously over an extended period of time in varying and hostile weather conditions. Work is also subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under immediate supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Works as a member of a trash, yard waste or garbage collection crew to load trash, debris and junked furniture and appliances from roadsides. Cleans area around cans and picks up loose trash. Assists with dumping solid waste at transfer site or landfill. Assists with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools. Watches out for the safety of co-workers. May operate non-CDL required vehicles as needed. Performs related duties as required.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED 

Special Requirement 
Possession of a valid NC Driver’s License
