Salary Range: $62,730–$84,048 | Full-Time | Exempt
Reports to: Assistant Library Director
Provides visionary leadership to ensure consistent, high-quality service to youth and caregivers across all platforms, including in-person, virtual, and outreach settings. Ensures departmental procedures align with library policies and are applied consistently. Oversees the creation and ongoing updates of the Youth Services departmental procedures manual.
Builds and maintains strong relationships with local schools, community groups, and organizations serving children and teens. Leverages these partnerships to promote collaboration and enhance library outreach and impact.
Leads the planning, implementation, and evaluation of innovative, developmentally appropriate programs for children and teens. Ensures programming is aligned with community needs, youth development trends, and the library’s strategic goals.
Oversees the presentation and functionality of youth and teen spaces to ensure they are welcoming, safe, and equipped with appropriate technology, furnishings, displays, and service points.
Collaborates with the Director of Collection Services and Youth Services Librarians to develop and maintain robust, responsive youth and teen collections that reflect community interests and needs.
Provides direct supervision to key Youth Services staff, including the Assistant Manager, Program Coordinators, and Librarians. Conducts performance evaluations, manages performance concerns, and promotes accountability through regular check-ins and team communication.
Leads recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training for Youth and Teen Services staff. Ensures service point coverage and staff development through comprehensive training materials and scheduling procedures in partnership with the Assistant Manager.
Fosters a culture of learning and professional growth. Provides ongoing coaching, mentoring, and development opportunities. Stays informed about current trends in youth librarianship and integrates them into staff training and services.
Manages departmental budgets related to programming, collections, and staffing. Allocates resources strategically and ensures fiscal responsibility. Prepares detailed statistical and narrative reports for the Library Director, Board, and other stakeholders.
Provides exemplary direct service at youth and teen service points. Models outstanding customer service and uses these interactions to assess and inform ongoing staff development and training needs.
Serves as Acting Manager on a rotating basis as part of the HEPL Leadership Team. Participates in strategic planning, system-wide initiatives, and leadership meetings. Supports cross-departmental service coverage and leads special projects as assigned.

- MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program
- At least 3 years of supervisory/management experience, ideally in a library setting
- Indiana LC2 certification required (or ability to obtain)
- Strong customer service orientation
- Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Proficiency in digital tools, library software, and social media
- A positive, collaborative approach to teamwork and problem-solving
- Must be able to lift/move up to 25 pounds
- Frequent walking, standing, reaching, and handling of materials
- Participation in outreach events (some off-site)
- Valid driver’s license required
