The City of Torrance welcomes applications for TEMPORARY FULL-TIME Librarians!

The mission of the Community Services Department is to enrich the community through the provision of recreational, cultural and educational opportunities for persons of all abilities. The Department has five divisions: Library, Administrative, Cultural, Recreation, and Parks.  Our main library is centrally located in the Civic Center and five branches are conveniently located within a five-mile radius of the main library. The Library Division has a circulation of over 1.2 million funded with a budget of $7.2 million and staffed with approximately 66 employees.

TEMPORARY FULL-TIME OPPORTUNITY


The primary duties of Librarians may include:

- Planning and executing a wide range of programs and services for adults, teens, or children including story times, book discussion groups, afterschool programs, displays, and other special events.
- Providing personalized information assistance and support including reader's advisory services.
- Selecting materials for the library's collections.
- Developing and designing marketing materials such as social media posts, displays, or other items to promote programs, collections and other library resources.
- Preparing and participating in outreach activities to promote the library in the community during and outside library operating hours to Torrance area schools, businesses and other community organizations.  

HOURS
The duration of this position will be a maximum of six months.

SALARY
Starting salary is $35.31/hour.

Position Duties

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited college or university, or a Bachelor's degree plus twenty-four units of graduate work in Library Science, or a Bachelor's degree plus three years of professional library experience.  Assignments as a Cataloger or Youth Services Librarian must have either an academic concentration or experience in that respective field.

License and/or Certificate

None required.

Ideal Candidate
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have:
  • Recent, relevant public library experience;
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with peers, the public, and City employees;
  • The ability to work collaboratively with all library users, staff and administration;
  • Library programming and outreach;
  • Knowledge of and ability to use current Library software; and
  • Experience working with electronic databases of library materials.

Other Qualifications

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions:

Requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in light work involving stooping and bending, and carrying items weighing up to 10lbs; moving from one area of the office to another; sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform skilled repetitive movements, such as the use of calculators or other office equipment and supplies.  May require the ability to climb ladders or step stools, push or pull book carts, lift and carry books or move boxes of materials of considerable weight from one location to another. Tasks require visual perception and discrimination and oral communications ability.  Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
