Job Description:

The role of commission assistant is a public-facing critical role for the Department of Land Conservation and Development. It’s fast-paced and interacts with a Land Conservation and Development Commission (LCDC), which is comprised of seven very busy, volunteer members.

This is a Limited Duration position for anyone to apply. The duration of this assignment is anticipated to last through February 28th, 2026, but could be extended based on business needs. During this time period, the commission will meet four times—twice outside of Salem, once in Salem, and once remotely.  DLCD staff members report to the Salem office once a week, in addition to the in-person Commission meetings noted above.

The commission is very active, with numerous action items designed to protect Oregon’s working lands and open spaces, while also supporting economic development in Oregon cities and counties. The work requires extraordinary attention to detail, as two-day meeting agendas, invitations, notes, and logistics are a representation of who we are as an agency.

As a commission assistant you will:’

  • Assist the commission chair and members in their policy oversight of department programs and operations; coordination of commission-related communications internally and externally; and in conveying commission logistics to the commission members, interested parties, partners, legislators, and the Governor's Office.
  • This position serves as executive support to the director and commission and provides administrative support LCDC. Such support includes proofreading agency documents before distribution, preparation of agendas and materials for commission meetings, and managing the logistics of commission business meetings, regional roundtables, travel, correspondence, and commission appointments and onboarding.
  • As the executive support in the director’s office while supporting the commission it will require strong project management skills to coordinate timely and accurate work by others in the agency, as well as guest speakers / presenters.

The Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD) would provide:

  • Educational opportunities to learn about Oregon’s land-use planning system.
  • Interaction with professional planners.
  • Project management experience – creating and delivering LCDC events from scratch.
  • Networking and travel throughout the state of Oregon – LCDC meetings typically feature local tours or regional roundtables with local leaders.
  • Facilitation of hybrid meetings – LCDC meetings are in-person with virtual participation options for the commissioners, staff, and public.
  • Budget management – ensuring travel options, meeting space, lodging, catering, and tours stay within budget while delivering a safe and comfortable experience.
  • An opportunity to see & participate in how natural resource agencies handle commissioner on-boarding, fleet reservations, SPOTS card expenses, reimbursements, tribal interactions / consultations, public meeting laws, community engagement, and public comment.
  • Experience in the Director’s office at DLCD and in Executive Session at LCDC.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of clerical/secretarial experience which included:
one year at a full performance level performing typing, word processing, or other generating of documents; AND lead work responsibility or coordination of office procedures.

Courses or training in Office Occupations or Office Technology may be substituted for up to one year of the clerical/secretarial experience.

No substitution will be made for the one year at the full performance level.

  • The ability to speak and write effectively, including proof reading.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Working independently and carrying out assignments without detailed instructions.

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is a PERS participating member, they will have the base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.  Successful candidates who are not yet a PERS participating member, will receive the 6.95% pay increase and begin the 6% employee contribution upon participating in PERS. DLCD employees are eligible for step increases on an annual basis, up to the top of the classification salary range.
