Night shift snowstorm Watch – Transportation Operations 

(Winter term; multiple positions available) 

 

The City of Lethbridge, Transportation Operations Section, has several opportunities for qualified individuals to perform the duties of Snowstorm Watch. This position is responsible for regularly checking winter weather updates, road and bridge deck conditions, and alerting the Foreman scheduled for duty of pending snow events that have the potential to create poor winter driving conditions. This position will also be responsible for operating streets equipment involved in snow removal and ice control, as well as assisting the supervising Foreman when required. 

 

Wage: $35.63 per hour as per the 2023-2026 CUPE agreement 

 

Term: Term for approximately 6 months; starting October 01, 2025 

  

  • Please note: this term is for the 2025-26 winter season only 

  • Please note night and weekend shift work will be involved on an 8-hour workday, 40-hour workweek night shift schedule.    

 

Duties: Successful candidates will be required to: 

  • Perform storm watch duties on an 8-hour workday, 40-hour workweek night shift schedule. 

  • Regularly check Wood Weather Information Services for weather updates, warnings and watches. 

  • Perform physical checks on road and bridge deck conditions. 

  • Apply sand, salt and/or liquid calcium to bridge decks to maintain safe driving surfaces. 

  • Safely remove debris and objects obstructing roadways. 

  • Notify the supervising Foreman to call in crews, as weather conditions dictate. 

  • Safely operate snow removal and ice control equipment, as assigned. 

  • Assist with data entry and tracking of sanding logs, hazard assessments and other related duties, as assigned. 

 

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualifications: 

 

  • Must have the ability to adhere to the watch duty time frames noted above and have significant experience in accurately assessing road conditions.  

  • Good familiarity with City roadway locations is a necessity. 

  • Knowledge of the snow and ice policies is an asset.  

  • Knowledge of anti-ice policy and procedure is an asset 

  • Significant experience and aptitude for safely operating streets snow removal and ice control equipment. 

  • Prior experience operating other types of heavy equipment including a street sweeper will be an asset.  

  • The successful candidate must have excellent driving and maneuvering skills to operate equipment safely in winter weather conditions.  

  • Completion of a high school diploma. 

  • Good mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot and maintain the equipment.  

  • Prior experience assisting with record keeping and hazard analysis will be an asset.  

  • Physical strength and dexterity to perform duties under all weather conditions is essential.  

  • The successful candidate must have a valid class 3Q license.
