About the Department

Leads and administers collegewide strategic functions for the Academic Division; serves as the Chief Academic officer and serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer for the College.  

Position Duties

  1. Administers, leads, and oversees the strategic vision and operational aspects of the Academic Division.  
  2. Has responsibility for supervision of the following academic areas: articulation agreements with colleges, universities and school districts; transfer of curriculum to colleges and universities; curriculum development and approval process, standards, pre- and co-requisites for transfer, occupational developmental and workforce training; systematic process of academic program review; maintenance of current and relevant curriculum/course bank; development of the class schedules; and compliance with policies and procedures for the District, recommending changes when appropriate. 
  3. Manages and leads academic Deans including prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations and employee discipline; ensuring employees adhere to College policies and procedures; making hiring, termination, and promotion recommendations to the President.  
  4. Develops and updates the Educational Master Plan. 
  5. Serves as the institutional contact/liaison for a variety of external entities, agencies, and high profile individuals on the local, national, and international level; interacts on a regular basis with elected officials, Economic Development Committees, City Councils, Chambers of Commerce, business CEO’s, and other high level individuals who may have a significant impact on the College; serves as a member of the Steering Committee for the AzTransfer group; initiates and participates in meetings; make presentations; creates and provides reports in support of the College’s long-term strategic goals; handles monthly preparation of materials to present at the Governing Board Meetings; and develops and administers international education programming and partnerships.  
  6. Establishes and maintains academic standards, procedures, methods and rules for educational program planning and evaluation, technology-linked learning, learning assessment and outcomes, curriculum, learning centers and student services of the College; plans for effective use of resources; examines operations and quality of service delivery to ensure maximum effectiveness; and establishes, maintains, and enforces strict compliance with academic credentials and qualifications.
  7. Researches, plans, recommends, implements, and manages all budgets assigned to division(s); participate in the development of both the College and division(s) budgets; approves expenditures according to annual operational plan to ensure the availability and appropriate allocation of resources; and assures the communication of strategies, priorities and processes to deans, directors, chairs, faculty, etc.  
  8. Works with appropriate staff to provide for faculty and staff development in matters facilitating student learning, technology use, and continuous quality improvement.  
  9. Responds to student and employee informal and formal complaints, grievances and personal problems; determines legitimacy of complaint and appropriate resolution; and, where needed, refers to appropriate process.  
  10. Formulates, develops, implements, administers, and evaluates policies and procedures in adherence with state/federal laws and Governing Board policies; works within College policies and procedures to resolve complex personnel and resource issues; makes recommendations and provides input to the President of the College on initiation and revision of District policies and procedures.        
  11. Participates in the College’s strategic planning processes and works with staff to develop both short- and long-term goals and objectives; continually monitors the College’s progress on numerous initiatives and strategic goals; develops strategies; and make recommendations regarding allocation of College resources.
  12. Participates in statewide curricular quality issues, articulation and transfer of courses, and distance delivery; and recommends policies to the College President that effect distributive delivery, quality and transfer.  
  13. Leads the accreditation process for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
  14. Performs other duties commensurate with functions and level of position or as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:  Master’s degree. Doctorate preferred.

EXPERIENCE:  Five (5) years of directly related experience, preferably experience as an Academic Department Director or Academic Dean.

SPECIAL POSITION CONDITIONS:  District-Wide / Nation-Wide travel may be occasionally required.

Background Verification:  As a condition of employment, all candidates accepting an offer of employment for a full-time, part- time, temporary, student worker, or volunteer position, will be required to undergo a Background Verification.  Employment with Central Arizona College is contingent upon the successful completion of the background verification.  The level the background verification for this position is: Standard level.

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of concepts, methods and practices of community colleges education and administration.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in higher education including state and federal requirements, and those of accrediting associations or institutions.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in administration of educational programs, with particular application of the community college.
  • Skill in providing leadership for a wide variety of programs and operations.
  • Skill in evaluating and analyzing program effectiveness, learning outcome assessment, student satisfaction, enrollment management, and in resolution of problems in program planning and operation.
  • Skills in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in developing and delivering presentations, conducting seminars, and facilitating small and moderate group collaboration processes.
  • Ability to interact with officials and Board members of the College, faculty, staff, students and representatives of various organizations and interests
  • Ability to maintain a positive high-profile image with internal and external constituents. 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The work is light work. The employee is frequently required to apply 10 pounds of force to move objects and occasionally required to exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, fingering, grasping, distinguishing among sounds, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity in data, and walking.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Critical/High Profile Level – Position interacts with some or all of the following: Governing Board, community groups, high level/high profile positions outside CAC, the legal community, political representatives, and international figures requiring the highest level of interpersonal skills for successful job performance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

Work is performed regularly where decisions are made that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if there is a failure to make the appropriate decision at the time. Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with occasional distractions such as noise and interruptions or in congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.

Important Notice: As a condition of employment, all full time Central Arizona College employee’s automatically become members of the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). This is a pension system that requires mandatory contributions from the employee with a matching contribution from the employer.  The 25-26 fiscal year contribution rate is 12.00%.  Please note this rate is subject to change on a fiscal year basis.
