
Job Title: Assistant ESL Teacher for Baxterville, Lumberton, & Purvis Schools
Reports to: EL Coordinator or Principal
Receives Guidance From: EL Coordinator, Principal
Job Purpose: To provide English Learner (EL) students in Baxterville, Lumberton, and Purvis schools with instructional support in learning appropriate skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) in the English language, as well as some academic content support.
Duties and Responsibilities: - Provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and support for English Learner (EL) and/or Immigrant students at the following schools:
- Baxterville School
- Jefferson Todd Alternative School
- Lumberton Elementary School
- Lumberton High School
- Purvis Lower Elementary
- Purvis Upper Elementary
- Purvis Middle School
- Purvis High School
- Collaborate with the district EL Coordinator and staff at each school in creating a work schedule that serves the needs of all the previously mentioned schools
- Work under the guidance and supervision of the EL Coordinator and certified staff at each school, including administrators, general ed teachers, and SPED teachers
- ESL services may include push-in, or inclusion-type support, in which the assistant ESL teacher will work with EL students in the general ed or SPED classroom, and it may also include pull-out ESL support in a separate room for individual or small groups of EL students.
- This position will require travel between different schools in Baxterville, Lumberton, and Purvis. The assistant ESL teacher will be reimbursed by LCSD for mileage incurred.
- Assist school & district staff in communicating with the parents/guardians of EL students. This may include phone calls, text messages via district software, or in planned or impromptu meetings at school facilities.
- Because well over 70% of the EL families in LCSD speak Spanish, bilingual applicants proficient in both Spanish and English are preferred for this position.
- Alert school certified staff and/or the EL Coordinator to special needs of individual children
- Provide assistance to and escort children as necessary
- Help maintain individual records for each child. Collaborate with the EL Coordinator on completing required paperwork for the ESL Program.
- When possible, participate in staff development, such as Professional Learning Communities (PLC's), to be equipped with the skills required to assist teachers in carrying out district initiatives.
Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset items assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use
Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
Maintain confidentiality
Regular, dependable, punctual, in person attendance is an essential function of this position
Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, EL Coordinator, or established by district policy
Qualifications:
Education level: Associates degree or higher from an accredited college. Minimum of 48 hours of college credit from an accredited college or pass a Work Keys test as determined by the Mississippi Department of Education.
