If so, the City and Borough of Juneau’s Accounts Receivable team is looking for you! We invite you to apply for the position of Accounting Technician I and become a key part of our dedicated and dynamic department.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Treasury team is seeking an enthusiastic, accounting-minded individual with strong attention to detail and a commitment to excellent customer service. The ideal candidate communicates effectively across a variety of platforms, including in-person interactions, email, and formal written correspondence with a diverse audience. Reliability and consistent in-office presence during business hours are essential. Accuracy and efficiency in high-volume data entry are also key to success in this role.

Our office and procedures are designed to support professional development, and we can provide both on-the-job and formalized educational opportunities to a candidate who demonstrates the skills we are looking for.

THE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAM

The Treasury Division is a tight-knit team that works together to ensure the timely and accurate collection of CBJ revenues, including taxes and miscellaneous billings. You will find the work complex and diverse, with frequent interruptions and public interactions, all while providing excellent customer service. You will be constantly assessing and prioritizing your tasks and workload. The Treasury Division is a dynamic and evolving environment that will require your innovative thinking, willingness to adapt quickly, and a flexible mindset. In return, you will experience a wide variety of duties, the opportunity for growth, and a collaborative team culture.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position generally works Monday through Friday, 8am – 4:30pm with an hour lunch in the middle of the day. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau on the first floor of City Hall.

Position Duties

As part of the Treasury Division, you will support the Accounts Receivable section by serving as a central point of contact for both internal and external customers. You’ll be at the heart of daily operations, shifting between tasks as priorities change and working within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. While many of your responsibilities follow a regular billing cycle, others will be unique and require creative problem-solving.

You will interact regularly with members of the public, both in person and by phone and email, responding to questions about accounts, payments, and policies. This role requires learning and applying CBJ code, policies, and procedures, as well as effectively communicating that information to a wide audience. You will also provide cross-training and backup support to the Sales Tax and Collections teams as needed.

Examples of duties include:

  • Delivering excellent customer service by responding to inquiries with professionalism and clarity.
  • Reviewing and processing regular, recurring, and one-time billings for other CBJ departments.
  • Preparing account adjustments and maintaining accurate backup documentation.
  • Researching and providing account balances, invoices, and billing details to customers.
  • Calculating and explaining finance charges, interest, and penalties on past-due accounts.
  • Issuing Senior Sales Tax Exemption cards and VIP Bus Passes in accordance with policy.
  • Using software systems such as Govern, Lawson, and Microsoft Outlook to manage data, run reports, and support daily operations.
  • Maintaining both electronic and physical files in an organized and audit-ready manner.

In this role, success depends on attention to detail, time management, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. We are committed to helping you build the skills needed to thrive in the world of public finance.
