Description
The Director of Prepress oversees all aspects of the prepress department, ensuring that print projects are prepared accurately, efficiently, and on schedule. This role involves managing a team of prepress technicians and color retouchers, ensuring quality control, troubleshooting file issues, and maintaining prepress software and hardware. The Director of Prepress collaborates with sales, project managers, and production staff to optimize workflow, reduce errors, and uphold print production standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the prepress team
- Manage incoming print files, preflight, proof, and prepare them for various printing processes (offset, digital, large-format, and POD)
- Distribute workload efficiently to meet production deadlines
- Consult with sales and account managers on file requirements, timelines, and production options
- Maintain prepress workflow systems, RIP software, color calibration tools, and department equipment
- Ensure consistent quality by implementing and maintaining prepress standards and best practices
- Develop, oversee, and maintain a centralized prepress department across all facilities
- Ensure all prepress operators are cross-trained to support all devices
- Troubleshoot and resolve file or system issues quickly and effectively
- Participate in production meetings and provide accurate status updates on jobs
- Train and mentor prepress staff to develop their technical skills and knowledge
- Stay up to date with evolving print technologies and software updates
- Manage the color retouching department and staff
Requirements
Qualifications – Education, Experience, License/Certifications:
- 15+ years of experience in prepress, with at least 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role
- Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat), Enfocus PitStop, and preflighting tools
- Familiarity with print production processes: offset, digital, and large format
- Understanding of color theory, color management, and calibration tools
- Experience with RIP software such as EFI Fiery and Fuji FMX
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and leadership abilities
- Experience with automated prepress workflows (e.g., Automation Engine, Esko, Print IQ) preferred
- Knowledge of imposition and plate-making systems preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Manual Dexterity: Ability to use hands and fingers to operate a computer, mouse, keyboard, and prepress equipment with precision
- Visual Acuity: Strong visual skills to accurately inspect and analyze digital files, proofs, and color outputs
- Sitting: Ability to sit for extended periods while working on computers and prepress equipment
- Mobility: Occasional standing, bending, and walking to access equipment and materials
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift and carry items up to 25 pounds
- Fine Motor Skills: Frequent use of fine motor skills for handling small materials and tools
- Hearing and Communication: Ability to listen to instructions and engage in team discussions
- Environmental Tolerance: Comfortable in a controlled environment with consistent lighting and occasional exposure to production floor conditions
- Physical Stamina: Ability to maintain focus during long periods of detailed work in a fast-paced setting
