THE ROLE:
We are looking to appoint a well-organised, highly motivated individual to take the lead role in a project that aim to enhance the control of environmental dry surface biofilms. An important aspect of this role will focus on evaluating the impact of new biological formulations against medically relevant environmental dry surface. You will work with a range of diverse bacteria in the form of environmental dry surface biofilms, evaluate formulation efficacy and characteristics. You will work closely with an industrial partner and be responsible to for effectively communicationing on project progress and report.
This is an exciting opportunity to become a Cardiff University employee working at the Pharmaceutical Microbiology laboratory at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
THE PERSON:
You will be a recent postgraduate with a PhD in Microbiology (or close to submission), and interest in infection prevention and control.
This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and is fixed term until 1 June 2026. This post will be based at the Cathays Campus.

Salary: £33,482 - £36,130 per annum (Grade 5). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description
To contribute to research within the efficacy of new biological formulations against selected biosafety level-2 microorganisms in the form of dry surface biofilms, carrying out supporting work that helps lead to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- To undertake research, e.g. by planning, preparing, setting up, conducting, and recording the outcome of experiments in the field of pharmaceutical microbiology whilst ensuring that experimental setups match the project plan and industry sponsor’s product recommendation.
- Actively participate within the research group, communicating and presenting research at meetings, through publications and other recognised avenues as appropriate, ensuring information is communicated to internal and external partners
- To contribute and support research publications and presentations as required
- To analyse and communicate complex ideas, concepts and data using appropriate methods and packages
- To resolve issues and support colleagues in devising procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
- To generate research output and contribute to the development of independent and original ideas as appropriate. Specifically, in the field of pharmaceutical microbiology and contribute to the development of independent and original ideas pertinent to biocidal products.
- To provide support in research activities for undergraduate courses and research programmes and provide guidance to other members of staff within the research team
- To maintain and update area of specialist knowledge, researching and critically appraising relevant literature within the area.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
- A degree in Microbiology or a relevant discipline
- Knowledge of research methods and techniques within dry surface biofilm field
- Proven ability to analyse complex information and summarise appropriately
- Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
- Experience of safe handling of Biosafety Level 2 Microorganisms
- Experience of using disinfectant test protocols including international efficacy test standards
- Proven communication skills, including presentation to various audiences
- Excellent organisational and team-working skills
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work
- Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience
- Ability to use a range of analytical equipment
- Evidence of collaborations with industry.
- Proven ability to work without close supervision
