Daily responsibilities of a Conventional Transit Operator include:

  • Safely operating a 40 foot transit vehicle, in high density rush hour traffic, in all weather conditions 
  • Following defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws, ETS regulations and standards 
  • Following maps and meeting timed schedules while transporting passengers to destinations on pre-determined routes 
  • Dealing with diverse and challenging customer situations and providing customers with transit information 
  • Ensuring your own safety and that of your passengers 
  • Monitoring fares 
  • Contributing to Edmonton Transit's professional image by demonstrating responsible and ethical behaviour in all of your activities 
  • Keeping yourself mentally and physically  prepared for a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays 
  • Checking the bus for operational readiness before entering into service

 


  • Grade 12 or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent qualifications and experience 
  • Proven ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions in English 
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's licence or operator's licensing equivalent (non-probationary & non-graduated) 
  • Driver's abstract showing a maximum of 3 demerits and no registry suspensions or convictions in the last 2 years.  Suspension of registry services will not be considered unless a reinstatement date is shown  
  • Held a valid operator's licence for the last 3 consecutive years 
  • Pass an enhanced police security clearance and  pre-employment medical examination 
  • Demonstrated success dealing with the public in a position that requires excellent interpersonal, problem solving, conflict resolution and independent decision making skills 
  • Meet the physical demands of the position which may include walking, squatting, lifting and twisting in order to safely operate a bus, its controls and provide passengers with assistance

Hours of Work: Various hours of shift work (straight or split shifts), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week.

First year: guaranteed minimum 67.5 hours biweekly. Thereafter: guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly.

 

Salary Range: 401, Salary Grade: 004 Training Rate: $20.658 (Hourly); Post Training Rate: $25.393 - $31.740 (Hourly). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton
