Job Title                  Heritage Planning Intern
 

Wage                      $19.34 (2025)

Reports to               Manager, Economic Development
 

Department             Development Services

Location                  City of Kawartha Lakes, ON

Hours                     Temporary Full Time up to 9 months, working hours are 35 hours/week between 8:00am - 5:00pm
 

Other                     Combination of general office environment and occasional travel. Attend meetings and conferences, which may be outside of normal business hours.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Economic Development Officer – Heritage Planning, this position will assist with the implementation of the designation strategy for culturally significant properties in the City of Kawartha Lakes by providing program coordination, background research, report writing and administrative support. This position will contribute to efforts to protect and conserve cultural and heritage assets within the City in relation to the impacts of Provincial legislative changes as defined in the Ontario Heritage Act and the Planning Act.

Essential Duties

Specific to this role:

  • Assist with the implementation of the City’s designation strategy for culturally significant properties
  • Conduct research and analysis of properties on the City’s Heritage Register and inventory of cultural heritage resources
  • Attend site visits, Municipal Heritage Committee meetings and Council meetings as required
  • Provide technical support and research assistance to the Heritage team

As a member of the team:

  • Administer defined procedures and recommend solutions to challenges or process improvements
  • Work collaboratively with others to deliver the outcomes as defined; report any challenges to supervisor
  • Respond to customer service concerns, investigating, problem solving, and responding within defined processes and advancing to the attention of supervisor, as appropriate
  • Maintain documentation and or databases and corporate records in accordance with policy and divisional practice; consider legislative municipal requirements such as Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)
  • Contribute to the development of program needs
  • Provide data or input on processes to allow reporting and decision making
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

     

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Architecture, Planning, Heritage, Canadian Studies or a related field
  • Demonstrated understanding in areas of Heritage Conservation
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Heritage Act policies and processes and heritage-related aspects of the Planning Act
  • Strong research, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Effective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills; Excellent written communication skills; attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated customer service skills at a level to develop and maintain cooperative/collaborative working relationships both within and outside the organization
  • Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and tact and maintain a high degree of confidentiality at all times, complying with all applicable privacy legislation and local policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, the internet and any other related software
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence or the ability to frequently attend work related activities at various sites within the municipality or at other sites within Ontario
  • Upon a conditional offer of employment, a Criminal Record Check will be required
     
  • Candidates must be prepared for skill testing
