Title: Phlebotomist - 14 months maternity cover

Reports to: Biospecimen Collections Supervisor

Fully office based role in London, White City, Scale Space

Starting salary: £26,000 per year plus benefits

This position is 100% onsite in London, White City, Scale Space office. You will need to be able to commute to this office from Monday to Friday.

The Opportunity 

We are seeking a motivated and proactive Phlebotomists to join our growing team at our Donor Centre Lab in London. This role offers an excellent opportunity for those with a medical background who are eager to expand their knowledge and practical skills in a supportive team environment. The position involves close interaction with the donor community, providing hands-on experience and valuable exposure in a research sector.

 

The successful candidate will be involved in donor consenting, screening and blood and biomaterial collections intended for use in biological research and therapies.

You will be passionate about driving scientific and healthcare advancements forwards by bringing curiosity, focus and collaboration to the team. 

 

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Completed Secondary Education
  • Qualification in Medical or associated degree or relevant professional experience
  • Qualified Phlebotomist

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Ability to work in a front line, high pressure, reactive environment
  • Good level of spoken/written English and mental/practical arithmetic
  • Proven ability to maintain accurate records and files
  • Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, management, and suppliers
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Good IT skills
  • Cannulation skills (desired but not compulsory)

Phlebotomy Duties

 

  • Practicing proper donor identification, donor registration and booking-in.
  • Obtaining Informed Consent from study participants in compliance with HTA and GCP guidelines 
  • Collecting donor medical history, taking vital signs (weight, height, Hb, etc).
  • Establishing eligibility for collection based on collected information and company’s SOPs. 
  • Deciphering the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific donor.
  • Collecting blood and other bio samples from donors.
  • Labelling collected material correctly, legibly, and accurately.
  • Providing a friendly, courteous, and sympathetic attitude with donors.
  • Always keeping your phlebotomy cart or station well-organized. 
  • Always practicing infection control standards when working with donors and equipment
  • Putting donor welfare as a priority above all else.
  • Ensuring any distressed donors are adequately monitored and treated.
  • Entering donor information into the company’s IT databases.
  • Adherence to organisation’s SOPs and guideline documents.
  • Checking label information against appropriate documentation
  • Organising material aligned with client requirements, working to fulfil both short-term & long-term orders and projects. 
  • General housekeeping tasks
  • Any other duties as required.

 

Leukapheresis Technician Duties (Upon successful completion of training and certification)

 

  • Evaluating donor criteria to establish their eligibility for Leukapheresis. 
  • Obtaining Leukapheresis Technician Certificate (training provided by CTLS) and operating Spectra Optia. 

 

General

  • To actively promote teamwork with all departments
  • To pro-actively manage the health and safety of yourself and others 
  • To follow the instructions and operating procedures and pro-actively work within the stipulations of ISO 9001:2015 Quality System and Human Tissue Act (HTA) compliance.
  • To comply at all times with client, company, and legal requirements such as health and safety, first aid and accident reporting
  • To actively protect company information, customer confidentiality and the security of staff and the business premises
  • This position involves extended periods of sitting, manual handling, and repetitive motions.

This position is a fixed-term employment contract for a 14-month period maternity cover.

This is a 40 hours per week contract, 8 hours per day, as designated on the shift rota. These hours consist of 3 shifts as follows: 7.00am -3.30pm, 8.00am -4.30pm and 9.00am -5.30pm. You are entitled to a 30-minute unpaid lunch, which may be required to be staggered to ensure cover of operational needs. The Company reserves the right to vary these hours and the starting and finishing times.
