The project is the first systematic study of the histories of words for YES and NO in European languages. Analysing large-scale corpora of Present-day and historical languages, the project will provide the first comprehensive linguistic account of the origins and historical development of strategies used by European languages to say YES and NO. This study will help us to understand why languages say YES and NO in different ways and why certain words come to function as responses.
This Research Project is being delivered within the Language and Linguistics research group. We are part of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Language and Linguistics Research group comprises 12 academic staff pursuing a diverse range of research interests in theoretical and applied linguistics. We encourage you to participate fully in the activities of the research group, including our research seminar series. Information about the Language and Linguistics Research group is available online here
Applicants should hold a doctoral level qualification in Linguistics. You should have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in corpus linguistics along with a good understanding of the fundamentals of syntactic theory. Experience of working with historical languages and European languages other than English may be an advantage.
