The National Director of Scrap Sales is a senior leadership role that’s responsible for end-to-end management of our ferrous and non-ferrous scrap-metal product lines (e.g., copper, catalytic converters, batteries, aluminum rims, steel). This dynamic role blends strategic sourcing, high-stakes contract negotiation, market analysis, logistics coordination, and financial oversight to optimize profitability and streamline operations across a 16-state territory. Reporting to the Controller with a dotted line to the Head of Commercial Sales and Buying, you’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage key vendor relationships, and shape our national scrap strategy.
As a National Director of Scrap Sales, you will fulfill the following job responsibilities:

Negotiate contracts with favorable price floors, assay premiums, and freight terms.
- Market Analysis & Strategy: Track global and regional commodity indices (COMEX, LME, regional scrap indices), tariffs, and economic factors to forecast pricing trends and develop dynamic pricing models. Publish weekly “Scrap Market Flash” updates and lead quarterly Product Review Sessions to adjust buying/selling strategies.
- Logistics & Supply Chain: Oversee cradle-to-port logistics (trucking, rail, international shipping), ensuring cost efficiency and compliance with DOT, EPA, and state regulations (e.g., hazmat shipments for batteries). Optimize load bundling and freight provider coordination to minimize costs.
- Financial Oversight: Drive P&L performance through real-time dashboards (Excel, Power BI, Tableau) tracking pounds sold, netbacks, and freight spend. Reconcile assay-based settlements and resolve discrepancies within 5–10 business days.
- Customer & Vendor Relationships: Serve as the primary source of contact for Tier-1 buyers (catalytic refiners, battery recyclers, steel mills), negotiating multi-hundred-thousand-dollar contracts and securing at least one new national account per product line quarterly.
- Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure 100% compliance with environmental (RCRA, E-waste), safety, and DOT regulations for all shipments. Conduct semiannual compliance audits and maintain up-to-date expertise on state and international export laws.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Collaborate with Accounting, Logistics, EHS, and Regional Managers to streamline operations. Present monthly performance summaries and market insights to the senior leadership.
