About Maureen Joy
Maureen Joy Charter School is a K-8 public charter school located in Old East Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in 1997 by a group of dedicated community members who wanted to create a new vision for public schools in Durham. Our school is tuition-free and open to the public, with admission determined by a random lottery. We believe all children can succeed regardless of race, neighborhood, or the income of their families and the children at our school have demonstrated this time and again.
Position Summary:
The Elementary School Counselor serves as a key advocate for student wellbeing through individual and group counseling sessions, crisis intervention, and social-emotional programming. This role requires close collaboration with staff, families, and community organizations to address student needs holistically. The counselor will oversee the school's SEAD (Social Emotional Academic Development) program, to include training of staff, provide student counseling services, manage attendance interventions, serve as the point person for community support services, and resources for students in foster care or experiencing homelessness. This position combines direct student support with systems-level coordination to create a nurturing school environment where all elementary students can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
