About Us

Friends From The City is a design, research, and engineering company focused on public impact. Our mission is to make digital interactions with government simple, intuitive, and accessible. That means removing barriers like confusing user flows, inaccessible content, and language limitations that prevent people from getting what they need.

We build digital products using accessible design, rigorous research, and reliable code.

About the Role

Millions of people rely on government websites and applications to access critical services like healthcare, housing, and financial support. But when those tools are slow, confusing, or difficult to use, it can make essential tasks feel impossible.

As a Frontend Developer at Friends, you will help change that. You will build fast, accessible, and reliable interfaces that help people complete important tasks with confidence. You will work closely with designers, researchers, and backend engineers to bring user-centered digital experiences to life.

Requirements

What you'll achieve:
You'll build the interfaces that connect people around the world. That means writing clean, accessible, production-ready code on a team that ships to real users every sprint.

  • Build and maintain React/Next.js interfaces using the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS)
  • Translate design prototypes into standards-compliant, reusable components
  • Partner with designers and backend engineers to deliver end-to-end features on a two-week sprint cycle
  • Own accessibility — Section 508 and WCAG 2.2 compliance are requirements, not afterthoughts
  • Write and maintain unit and integration tests; participate in code review via GitLab
  • Support multilingual interfaces, including Spanish, as the platform expands globally
  • Ship to production at least once per sprint

Skills You’ll Need to Bring:
We are looking for a thoughtful engineer who is committed to usability, accessibility, and working in the open. The ideal candidate brings a mix of the following:

  • 7+ years building responsive web applications in production environments
  • Strong command of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React
  • Comfort with Next.js or willingness to get there fast
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG 2.2)
  • Experience in agile teams; you know what a sprint review and a retrospective are
  • Ability to obtain a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) clearance

Nice To Haves:
Good to have, but not required:

  • You've worked with USWDS before
  • You've built for multilingual or right-to-left user bases
  • You have federal or civic tech experience
  • You've contributed to open-source projects
  • You're comfortable in AWS environments (CloudFront, S3, Lambda) even if DevOps isn't your main thing

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline or equivalent experience. 7+ years of relevant experience preferred. Whether or not you check every box, we encourage you to apply if the role and mission excite you.
