We are pleased to announce a fully funded PhD position focusing on the study of Archean microbialites. This is an exceptional opportunity to explore some of the earliest evidence of life on Earth. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation as part of a research project led by Professor Marin Carbonne.
Expected start date in position : 01.01.2026 or upon mutual agreement
Contract length : 1 x 2 x 1 years (maximum 4 years)
Activity rate : 100 %
Workplace : Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Lausanne
The advertised position is to join the microbialite and SIMS research group led by Professor Marin Carbonne.

This will be achieved by combining cutting-edge analytical techniques, including high-resolution microscopy, geochemical analysis and SIMS isotopic studies, to reveal the intricate relationships between primitive life forms and the evolving conditions of the Earth's surface. The successful candidate will receive training in SIMS analyses. The research involves collaborating with international colleagues.
20 % will involve teaching assistance, supervising master's students and helping in the laboratory.
• Master's degree in Geochemistry, Geology, Earth Sciences, or related field;
• Strong background in geochemistry, sedimentology, or geobiology;
• Experience with microscopy, isotope and geochemical analysis preferred;
• Commitment to research based on experiental approaches.
We offer a nice working place in a multicultural, diverse and dynamic academic environment. Opportunities for professional training, a lot of activities and other benefits to discover.
