Job Summary:
The main responsibility of the Taxation Manager is to ensure that LUMA meets all its tax filing and payment obligations regarding all applicable municipal, Puerto Rico, and U.S. tax laws. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s tax obligations, ensuring compliance with local and international tax laws, and optimizing tax strategies. The Taxation Manager will provide expert guidance on direct and indirect taxes, oversee filings, and support financial planning initiatives.Job Description:
Develops a thorough understanding of LUMA’s responsibilities regarding municipal, Puerto Rico and U.S. tax legislation, including staying current with changes to legislation
Ensures the timely and accurate preparation and filing of tax returns, extensions and any required tax payments
Coordinates the preparation, filings and payments for the PR income tax returns and extensions, the municipal volume of business returns and extensions, personal property tax returns, the sales and use tax returns and import declarations, including preparing responses to municipal enquiries on LUMA’s VOB filings, and any required filings at the PR Department of State.
Prepares the quarterly estimated income tax payments and ensures payment is made timely
Provides guidance on income tax withholding at source to LUMA finance, remits the withholdings to the PR Treasury, prepares and files the quarterly returns
Compiles the information to prepare and file Forms 480’s to the PR Treasury and coordinates delivery to the vendors
Prepares the tax provision under ASC 740 provisions, including the return provision and preparation of tax journal entries
Provides input related to the income tax provision being recorded for financial statement purposes
Provides guidance and support to other LUMA departments on taxation issues including sales and use tax, payroll taxes, income tax withholding at source and municipal construction taxes
Performs tax research and analysis on numerous diverse tax issues
Interacts with governing authorities and external auditors
Provides timely responses to information requests and works through complex tax issues
Supports and maintains relationship with external tax, legal, and other advisors, and reviews their opinions when required
Participates in cross functional project teams working on key company initiatives
Develops internal standards, policies and procedures regarding taxation including compliance with applicable control framework
Provides information to and fulfills information requests from LUMA’s shareholders, including helping confirm shareholders are comfortable with the tax implications of dividend amounts
Supports the company’s response to major storm restoration efforts and participates in associated drills as required
Follows all policies and procedures
Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Job Description:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required. Master’s degree preferred.
6-8 years of experience in a taxation role dealing with entities operating in Puerto Rico
Strong analytical, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
Track record of working collaboratively with multiple departments to identify and solve issues and ability to influence at all levels in the organization
Able to multi-task and prioritize in a dynamic environment to meet strict deadlines
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and effectively interact with other departments to achieve shared goals
Proficient (reading, writing, speaking) in Spanish and English
Strong organizational skills required to manage multiple, concurrent tasks and people
Proficient and knowledgeable with computer programs and applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Google Docs, and SharePoint
Preferred
Experience in a public accounting firm
Experience with taxation for a utility and/or Puerto Rican government entity
Licenses/Certifications:
