Job Title: Phlebotomy Student Externship 
Hours: 4-8 hrs/week, one day per week

The mission of Lyon-Martin Community Health Services is to provide high quality, compassionate and trauma-informed medical, gynecological, and mental health care services to trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex communities and cis-gender women with specific sensitivity to LGBQ sexual orientation, disability, size, race, ethnicity, and language, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay.

Job Summary 

A Phlebotomy Externship involves supervised practical experience in a field setting, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills in a laboratory under the guidance of a qualified professional. This experience aims to provide real-world exposure and enhance clinical skills in areas like successful venipunctures, and patient communication.  At Lyon-Martin, you will be working in a clinic that provides gender affirming health care services, and the focus of this externship will be providing gender affirming health care for our patients.

Key Responsibilities 

Observation and gradual participation: Begin by observing a licensed CPTI, CPTII, or medical provider

Data collection & Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including SOAP notes and progress reports.

Professional Conduct: HIPAA regulations, and Lyon Martin Community Agreements; Demonstrate punctuality and respectful communication. 

Self- Reflection and Feedback: Engage in regular self- assessment and constructive feedback; Set personal goals for growth and track progress throughout the externship. 

Collaboration: Work closely with supervisors and other professionals on the team; Communicate effectively across disciplines to support client outcomes.  

Cultural and Linguistic Sensitivity, Harm-reduction: Demonstrate awareness and respect for diverse cultural backgrounds, communication styles, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and economic statuses. 

Communication & Collaboration: Collaborate patient care with other healthcare professionals within the clinic.  

Professional Development: Participate in supervision meetings, attend workshops or seminars, and seek opportunities for professional growth and development.  

Patient Interaction: Provide patient-centered care, establish rapport, and create a positive and supportive therapeutic environment.  

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a Graduate Program:Externships are typically part of the curriculum for students pursuing aCPTI certification

Education, Knowledge, Skills

Education/Licensure:  

  • Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1) students who have successfully completed their National Certification,Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1) license exams.All students are required to complete 40 hours and 50 successful venipunctures at one clinical site.

Required: 

  • Culturally sensitive/humble and able to work with a diverse population.Interest in or ability to work with high acuity patient population
  • Experience working with lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex clients.
  • Experience working with populations with varying disabilities, racial,ethnicand culturalbackgroundsand economic statuses.
  • Experience working with clients who do sex work, those experiencing homelessness, people who have challenges with mental illness and/or are using substances, those of with a history of incarceration, people of varying ages. 

Preferred: 

  • Bilingual in English & Spanish or other non-English language.
