About the Department
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Patrols assigned districts, watches for and investigates unusual activity or circumstances; checks buildings for unsecured windows, doors, malfunctioning lights, fire hazards, and dangerous conditions
- Responds to radio calls, crime violations in progress, and reports unusual incidents
- Checks vehicle registrations, individual ID’s, and outstanding warrants;
- Completes reports, to include incident reports, activity logs, and field interview cards;
- Walks perimeter of buildings and grounds to check for any suspicious activities and remains at buildings until secured if found unlocked; assists tourists, motorists, faculty, staff and students;
- Gives directions of locations of campus buildings or departments; assists with vehicle lock-outs and calls for road-side services; directs traffic in situations such as accidents, special events, malfunctioning traffic signals, or illegally parked vehicles;
- Enforces campus parking regulations;
- Assists other police agencies with traffic control when needed; assists in protecting VIP’s by limiting the public access, inspects packages, escorts VIP’s and controls entry areas of meetings;
- Conducts investigations of traffic accidents, interviews persons involved and interviews witnesses; maintains technical proficiency in the areas of firearms, current court rulings, changes in state laws in new law enforcement methods and techniques;
- Provides information and education regarding high risk areas, precautionary measures in times of increased criminal activity, and general tips in crime prevention; escorts individuals who work early or late shifts, from buildings to their vehicles, monitors campus parking lots, and performs other related work as assigned.
