Position Summary

Bow Valley College is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Academic Advisor to join our Academic Advising team. Reporting to the Manager, Academic Advising, this role supports learners in making informed decisions about their educational goals and provides guidance to help them successfully complete their programs. The Academic Advisor plays a key role in enhancing learner satisfaction, success, and retention by delivering high-quality advising services that reflect the College’s mission, vision, and values.

The Academic Advisor provides individual and group advising through in-person, online, and telephone appointments, helping learners with course selection, program planning, and academic mapping. This role involves collaborating closely with Program Chairs, faculty, and staff across departments to develop personalized education plans that align with each learner’s goals, schedule, and academic circumstances. Advisors guide learners through registration processes, explain policies and procedures, assist with transfer credit evaluations, and support students in understanding graduation and program requirements. They also help learners navigate academic and personal challenges by identifying appropriate supports, referrals, and remediation strategies when necessary.

Beyond individual advising, the Academic Advisor contributes to outreach and engagement by facilitating workshops, orientation sessions, and advising-related events. They play an active role in promoting the College at recruitment and learner success initiatives such as Open House, New Student Orientation, and the Learner Services Expo. Advisors also maintain strong communication with learners throughout the academic cycle—sharing critical updates, deadlines, and opportunities—and collaborate with internal departments to ensure information accuracy and service consistency.

This role requires the ability to maintain detailed and confidential learner records, track advising statistics, and contribute to process improvements within the Academic Advising team. Advisors are expected to stay current on program and course information, institutional policies, and external transfer opportunities to provide accurate, timely, and supportive guidance to all learners.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years’ experience in a post-secondary environment are required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Preferred qualifications include four years of experience in a post-secondary or learner support role, strong customer service skills, experience using student information systems, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse learner population.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact on learner success and contribute to an inclusive, supportive academic environment at Bow Valley College.

If your education was received internationally we will require you provide an international education assessment through IQAS, WES, or one of the other nationally designated organizations upon hire.

Closing Date: November 12, 2025

This opening is a temporary (AUPE) position with an anticipated conclusion in late February, 2026. Please note all successful candidates will be required to provide copies of government issued identification and proof of educational qualifications upon hire and may be required to provide an enhanced police information check.
