ABOUT THE POSITION:
The parks & landscape maintenance team maintains 1,036 acres of park land and park amenities in neighborhood, community and regional parks; maintains 15 acres of specialized parks, at Luther Burbank Home & Gardens and Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery; and 65 acres of landscaped roadway medians.  Staff also provide land stewardship for 195 acres of open space, ten special landscaping districts, and landscapes around a variety of City buildings

Groundskeepers perform custodial, landscaping, and routine maintenance in the cleaning and maintenance of parks or other landscaped areas in City facilities and property.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process will include a minimum qualifications assessment, and may also include an application and supplemental questionnaire review, followed by department selection interviews. It is anticipated that interviews will take place towards the end of May.

Position Duties

  • Clean and maintain outdoor areas such as picnic areas, including weeding, watering, planting, picking up litter, and assisting in the care of trees, shrubs, lawns and groundcover;
  • load, unload and transport dirt, plants, and construction materials;
  • assist in roadway lane closures by setting up traffic cones, directional signs and barricades to channel traffic;
  • perform minor building maintenance, cleaning and custodial duties, and sanitizing restrooms
  • remove small trees, stumps and roots, and assist in removing larger trees, stumps, dragging brush and roots;
  • repair and/or report vandalism, damage or major maintenance requirements, and remove graffiti;
  • inspect and clean irrigation systems;
  • replace broken sprinkler heads and nozzles and make related basic repairs of irrigation systems;
  • remove trash and foreign debris in and around ponds, creeks, and lakes;
  • fertilize plants and identify and assist in the control of common pests and diseases;
  • mow and edge grass areas and assist with athletic field maintenance;
  • maintain and clear clogs in drinking fountains and restroom fixtures;
  • transport equipment, materials, or debris from one location to another;
  • assist the public and warn them of hazards;
  • clean and maintain trucks, equipment and tools used on the job;
  • dispose of litter, broken glass, debris and brush;
  • assemble, paint and make minor repairs to playground equipment using a wide variety of hand and power tools;
  • assist with special construction and installation projects, such as building sheds and cabinets, constructing signs, pouring cement pads, painting, and installing benches, barbecues, drains, shelves and walkways;
  • clean ditches; and
  • dig trenches and post holes

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:  Uses and purposes of a variety of general construction tools and equipment; safe work practices, including safety precautions for operating power equipment and working in traffic and under hazardous conditions.
 
Ability to: Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions; use a wide variety of common and specialized hand and power tools; use mop or other tools to clean a work area; clean equipment using appropriate materials; learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation; perform heavy manual labor under adverse working conditions; understand and carry out oral and written directions in order to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner; take basic measurements of boards or spaces; fill out work orders; communicate and get along with the public and co-workers in a face-to-face one-on-one setting; drive light trucks.
 
Experience and Education:  Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Six months of experience in heavy manual work; Education - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License and Certificate: This classification requires the use of a City vehicle while conducting City business to move from one site to another throughout the work day carrying supplies and equipment. In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess a valid, Class C, California driver license.

Possession of First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification from the American Red Cross is desirable.

Other Qualifications

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Groundskeepers perform duties outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements, heavy traffic, noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, airborne particles, noxious odors, grease, oil, cleaning chemicals, solvents and spills. Incumbents walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; climb ladders or steps to reach objects; work with chemicals, pesticides and insecticides using normal and specialized protective equipment; repeatedly lift shovels of earth or debris weighing up to 40 pounds; carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, such as full trash cans, potted trees and shrubs, sand bags and tampers, and move them up to 100 feet; and set up and remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects. While directing traffic, incumbents make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.  Various maintenance tasks involve bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time. While raking and shoveling landscape materials, incumbents use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body. Trimming trees, loading debris into trucks and installing signs require lifting arms above shoulder level.  A Groundskeeper must be able to respond to alarms and other visual or auditory warning devices such as back-up warning devices on trucks.
