JOB SUMMARY:
Draws blood samples from patients by skin punctures, venipunctures and/or arterial punctures maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being preformed. Prepares patients for phlebotomies and distributes specimen to appropriate laboratory units.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Obtains blood specimens from patients by skin punctures, venipunctures and/or arterial punctures in a safe manner ensuring the integrity of the specimen.
2. Accurately links specimens to correct patient using the established laboratory protocols designed to maintain foolproof identification and matching of samples.
3. Input computer information on patients, testing, and special comments. Also test results look-up and printing.
4. Prepares patient for phlebotomy to include applying tourniquet as appropriated, swabbing puncture area with antiseptic and safety inserting needle into vein.
5. After procedure, applies treatment to puncture site and labels and stores specimens.
6. Prepare specimens for transport to hospital laboratory.
7. Prepares collection trays and keeps collection area in a clean and safe environment.
8. Participates in the Diagnostic Center process improvement activities.
9. Adheres to dress code.
10. Functions as a preceptor to orient new employees.
11. Meets all departmental and phlebotomy specific competencies.
12. Adheres to medical center policies addressing infection control, safety, and personnel guidelines.
13. Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with the medical center code of conduct and applicable corporate policies and procedures.
14. Maintains patient confidentiality and treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
15. Prepares patients for EKG procedures and performs the study.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Experience with puncture and sweat chloride collection equipment preferred. Attention to detail. Knowledge of computer equipment. Basic computer skills are required. Basic computer skills including:
1. Turn your personal computer on and off.
2. Recognize the four major parts of the computer.
3. Identify and explain the use of the four parts of the standard keyboard.
4. Recognize the mouse and understand how to use it.
5. Open and close a program using Windows.
6. Recognize and understand the operator panel on a printer
7. Load paper.
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:
A high school diploma or equivalency is required. BLS training is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. May be subject to electrical energy hazards. May be exposed to bio hazardous substances. May be subject to cuts. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May perform emergency care. May be subject to many interruptions. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Travel may be required. May be asked to work absentee replacement on short notice.
There is a potential for being at risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals when working. Information regarding hazards and protective measures along with training on handling and storage of hazardous materials will be provided prior to initial assignment to work with hazardous chemicals, whenever the hazard changes, and on an annual basis.
