Position Summary
The Diet Technician plays a key role in ensuring patients receive meals that align with their prescribed diet orders. This position is responsible for tracking inpatient admissions, diet orders, patient transfers, and discharges, as well as supporting Oncology meal service, managing the Crag Crest kitchen, and maintaining the Oncology Diet Kitchen.
During meal prep (lunch and dinner), the Diet Tech collaborates with the Concierge, Sous Chef, and General Manager to prepare patient meals, sandwiches, and other food items. Additional duties include assisting with catering setup and teardown, maintaining catering supplies, delivering requisitions, and performing other tasks as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities
· Maintain and monitor all physician diet orders.
· Review patient charts for food allergies; confirm allergies with patients or nursing staff and communicate findings to Nutrition Services staff and the Dietitian.
· Discuss meal menus with patients to identify allergies, preferences, and dietary needs.
· Perform basic diet calculations to ensure meals comply with diet orders.
· Prepare patient meals, complete tray lines, deliver trays, and maintain temperature and sanitation logs.
· Record patient census and complete required ongoing training.
· Communicate patient needs or concerns to the Dietitian and/or nursing staff.
· Communicate dietary requirements to Nutrition Services staff and tally meal orders accurately for the kitchen.
· Maintain accurate records of temperatures, cleaning, and inventory.
· Assist other Nutrition Services team members as needed.
· Support catering operations, including setup, delivery, and cleanup.
· Manage inter-department requisitions.
· Oversee Oncology Meal Service, including maintenance, stocking, and record-keeping for Oncology kitchens.
· Take orders, prepare meals, and deliver Oncology trays.
· Collaborate with Concierge, Sous Chef, and Garde Manger on inpatient, café, and catering food preparation.
Required Education & Experience
· Minimum one year of quantity food service experience; restaurant or institutional experience preferred.
· Knowledge of food service sanitation, safety standards, and modified diets.
· Strong attention to detail when reviewing diet orders, menus, and recipes.
· Basic math and computer skills required.
· Ability to read and write English and follow verbal and written instructions.
· Strong communication skills for interacting with employees, patients, visitors, and medical staff.
· Experience with cash register and credit card machine operation preferred.
· High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
Physical Demands
· Prolonged standing and walking on potentially wet floors.
· Lifting up to 40 lbs. and frequent pushing/pulling of carts and equipment.
· Walking between hospital buildings (often up to 5+ miles per day).
· Requires close vision and the ability to work under pressure to meet meal service deadlines for patients and the cafeteria.
