This position aims to ensure the continuing operation of City water and sewer services. This is accomplished by supervising work crews and participating in various maintenance services. Other duties may include maintaining water and sewer lines, operating the vactor machines, installing sample stations and fire hydrants, assisting with other related projects, and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position provides direction to other employees.
Position Duties
- Maintains water lines by coordinating work activities and projects, notifying residents of work to be done in their neighborhood, marking, digging, cutting and splicing lines, covering holes, assisting with the installation, repair and maintenance of water mains, valves, hydrants, meters and making other necessary repairs.
- Maintains sewer lines by locating and flagging sewer lines, digging, cutting and splicing lines, piecing in cover-ups, marking and repairing lines, correcting stoppages, cleaning lines with jet cleaners and making other necessary repairs.
- Supervises work crews by interviewing and selecting applicants, coordinating work activities, developing work schedules, planning equipment and supply needs, ensuring project completion, providing feedback and evaluations, counseling and coaching, administering the disciplinary process and assisting in work projects when necessary.
- Provides on the job training, guidance and assistance to crew members and requires the ability to provide instruction for interpretation on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Creates, completes, assigns and closes work orders using Cityworks ensuring that all pertinent information is recorded.
- Assists in related services by providing concrete finishing services, maintaining equipment and supplies, completing time sheets, maintaining records of work, logging schedules and work completed and by providing customer service as required.
- Installs sample stations and fire hydrants by locating proper installation points, completing installations, providing preventative maintenance and making repairs as necessary.
- Inspections of grease traps in accordance with City Ordinances.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- High School diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of relevant work experience
Certification and Other Requirements
- Valid Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License is required, with tanker endorsement preferred or the ability to obtain tanker endorsement within one (1) year from date of hire.
- Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Water Distribution or Class III Wastewater Collection with the ability to obtain the other.
- National Association of Sewer Service Companies' Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (NASSCO PACP), Lateral Assessment Certification Program (NASSCO LACP), Manhole Assessment and Certification Program (NASSCO MACP) Certifications or ability to obtain within one (1) year depending on assignment.
- Possession of Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Incident Management System (FEMA NIMS) ISC-100 and ISC 700 Certificates or ability to obtain within one (1) year from date of hire.
Must be available to respond to emergencies as needed, including on a rotating or as-needed basis within assigned areas of responsibility.
