The UTSC Library is a leader in academic library services and program development. The library supports research and study by housing an extensive network of scholarly materials in many formats. The library offers an extensive reference and research service and holds a local collection of about 400,000 print items, journal subscriptions, sound recordings, videos and films, a leisure reading collection, special research and archival collections. Your opportunity:


Reporting to the Associate Librarian, Research & Digital Initiatives, the Digital Tamil Studies Technician is responsible for contributing to and creating special digital Tamil collections for the U of T Scarborough Library as part of the Digital Scholarship Unit (DSU) Team. The incumbent will also collaborate with the UTSC Archivist, DSU team members, a variety of students, and a community-based advisory group for the bilingual description and digitization of key Tamil information.

This role will be required to translate documents where excellent written and oral communication skills are required in Tamil and English, along with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. In addition, this position will be required to analyze content and describe materials utilizing standard practices, resources and online databases.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Creating metadata (in Tamil and English)
  • Checking digital objects for quality control
  • Drafting documents for knowledge translation purposes (e.g. taking Tamil documents and translating into English)
  • Overseeing the automated document conversion process
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms
  • Checking metadata for quality control
  • Keeping well-informed on applicable copyright, access and privacy laws

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education
  • Minimum four years of related library work experience with collections
  • Demonstrated work experience with metadata schemes within an academic community
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Tamil and English (e.g. Strong ability to translate documents from Tamil to English)
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Excel and Word, with demonstrated comfort learning new and evolving technologies at a quick pace
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment and take initiative
  • Ability to deal with a large volume of materials
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines
