The Health Information Specialist is responsible for protecting and releasing protected health information following all regulatory guidelines and LFN policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary certificate in health information technology / health sciences or related field preferred
- 2 years of recent, relevant experience in medical record administration in a healthcare setting
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred
- Experience working with Electronic Practice Management (EPM) and Electronic Health Records (EHR)
- Knowledge of medical records laws and HIPAA requirements/regulations
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Working knowledge of Healthcare Revenue Cycle including basic understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial Insurers regulations and standards

- Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to effectively communicate LFN Medical Record and HIPAA policies and procedures to patients
- Able to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and consistently meet deadlines and goals
- Proactive and self-directed with the ability to work with a team and autonomously
- Strong organizational and analytical skills with a high attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and oral with the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently
- Ability to handle highly confidential, sensitive and non-routine information using discretion and judgement
- Ability to compose specialized or sensitive correspondence
- HIPAA Certification within 6 months of hire
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Communicate with record requestors including patients, first responders, hospitals, tissue banks, coroners, health insurance companies, record retrieval companies, government agencies and attorneys via phone, mail, email and in person
- Manages all release of information requests in compliance with all applicable laws and LFN policy and procedures
- Notifies Revenue Cycle Manager of subpoenas, jury summons and situations that require escalation as related to Revenue Cycle Management
- Maintains accurate documentation of information released
- Performs performance improvement functions through data collection and documentation review and quality audits to ensure integrity of data and HIPAA compliance
- Account Administrator for Third Party Resources
- Perform other related tasks as assigned
