About the Department





Maintenance Technician participates in inspection, troubleshooting, installation, maintenance, repair, replacement and overhaul of pumps, compressors, engines, generators, motors, switch gear, mechanical equipment, control systems, electrical systems, piping systems, and other fixtures and equipment found in the Town of Plainfield’s Utilities.

Position Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Performs preventive maintenance on buildings, grounds, equipment, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems. 
  2. Tests, locates, and repairs defects in electrical circuits or equipment. 
  3. Fabricates and modifies parts, structures and equipment from a variety of materials. 
  4. Uses a variety of hand and power tools, cutting and welding equipment and electrical testing equipment. 
  5. Operates vehicles and stationery machinery, as required. 
  6. Maintains records and logs of work performed. 
  7. Makes oral and written reports of work performed. 
  8. Performs any other duties that are appropriate for the scope and level of responsibility of this series.
  9. Perform and lead a variety of routine maintenance, service, and cleaning tasks. 
  10. Recognize and report unusual, inefficient or dangerous mechanical and electrical situations. 
  11. Interpret technical manuals, drawings, and specifications, including layouts, blueprints and schematics. 
  12. Diagnose and determine effective course of action for correcting defects in electrical and mechanical systems and equipment. 
  13. Use hand and power tools necessary in making general repairs and adjustments to motors, pumps, and other equipment, and fabrication, as necessary. 
  14. Performs other related operations support functions such as filling-in for basic utility operator duties and will take regular on-call assignments.
  15. Maintain work records and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports. 
  16. Perform maintenance work independently. 
  17. Utilize appropriate safety precautions, methods, and apparatus to minimize and withstand exposure to chemicals, dust and mechanical and electrical hazards.


Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. 

Minimum Qualifications

Accreditation as a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician, Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional is desirable.

Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and  four years experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience as a maintenance technician is desired. Accreditation as a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician, Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional desired.

Other Qualifications

Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required when towing trailers.
  • The ability to use specialized tools, equipment, and machines to include: gauge, calipers, recorders, pitot tubes, calculators, leak detection equipment, pipe locating equipment, meter testing equipment, transit, valve machines, tapping machines, water main sectional maps, saws, cutters, air compressors is required.
  • The ability to detect flows in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial actions is required.
  • A basic knowledge of modern utility operations is required.
  • The ability to adapt and conform to shifting priorities and demands and execute accordingly. 
  • The ability to remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.
  • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); working near moving mechanical parts; working in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; the risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.


While the offices of the Utilities Department are usually open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also requires the ability to drive Utilities Department vehicles. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required.
